And when the camp setteth forward, Aaron shall come, and his sons, and they shall take down the covering vail, and cover the ark of testimony with it:
And upon the table of shewbread they shall spread a cloth of blue, and put thereon the dishes, and the spoons, and the bowls, and covers to cover withal: and the continual bread shall be thereon:
And they shall take a cloth of blue, and cover the candlestick of the light, and his lamps, and his tongs, and his snuffdishes, and all the oil vessels thereof, wherewith they minister unto it:
And they shall take all the instruments of ministry, wherewith they minister in the sanctuary, and put them in a cloth of blue, and cover them with a covering of badgers' skins, and shall put them on a bar:
And they shall put upon it all the vessels thereof, wherewith they minister about it, even the censers, the fleshhooks, and the shovels, and the basons, all the vessels of the altar; and they shall spread upon it a covering of badgers' skins, and put to the staves of it.
And when Aaron and his sons have made an end of covering the sanctuary, and all the vessels of the sanctuary, as the camp is to set forward; after that, the sons of Kohath shall come to bear it: but they shall not touch any holy thing, lest they die. These things are the burden of the sons of Kohath in the tabernacle of the congregation.
And to the office of Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest pertaineth the oil for the light, and the sweet incense, and the daily meat offering, and the anointing oil, and the oversight of all the tabernacle, and of all that therein is, in the sanctuary, and in the vessels thereof.
But thus do unto them, that they may live, and not die, when they approach unto the most holy things: Aaron and his sons shall go in, and appoint them every one to his service and to his burden:
From thirty years old and upward until fifty years old shalt thou number them; all that enter in to perform the service, to do the work in the tabernacle of the congregation.
And they shall bear the curtains of the tabernacle, and the tabernacle of the congregation, his covering, and the covering of the badgers' skins that is above upon it, and the hanging for the door of the tabernacle of the congregation,
And the hangings of the court, and the hanging for the door of the gate of the court, which is by the tabernacle and by the altar round about, and their cords, and all the instruments of their service, and all that is made for them: so shall they serve.
At the appointment of Aaron and his sons shall be all the service of the sons of the Gershonites, in all their burdens, and in all their service: and ye shall appoint unto them in charge all their burdens.
This is the service of the families of the sons of Gershon in the tabernacle of the congregation: and their charge shall be under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.
From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old shalt thou number them, every one that entereth into the service, to do the work of the tabernacle of the congregation.
And this is the charge of their burden, according to all their service in the tabernacle of the congregation; the boards of the tabernacle, and the bars thereof, and the pillars thereof, and sockets thereof,
And the pillars of the court round about, and their sockets, and their pins, and their cords, with all their instruments, and with all their service: and by name ye shall reckon the instruments of the charge of their burden.
This is the service of the families of the sons of Merari, according to all their service, in the tabernacle of the congregation, under the hand of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest.
¶ And Moses and Aaron and the chief of the congregation numbered the sons of the Kohathites after their families, and after the house of their fathers,
From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entereth into the service, for the work in the tabernacle of the congregation:
These were they that were numbered of the families of the Kohathites, all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation, which Moses and Aaron did number according to the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses.
From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entereth into the service, for the work in the tabernacle of the congregation,
These are they that were numbered of the families of the sons of Gershon, of all that might do service in the tabernacle of the congregation, whom Moses and Aaron did number according to the commandment of the LORD.
From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that entereth into the service, for the work in the tabernacle of the congregation,
These be those that were numbered of the families of the sons of Merari, whom Moses and Aaron numbered according to the word of the LORD by the hand of Moses.
All those that were numbered of the Levites, whom Moses and Aaron and the chief of Israel numbered, after their families, and after the house of their fathers,
From thirty years old and upward even unto fifty years old, every one that came to do the service of the ministry, and the service of the burden in the tabernacle of the congregation,
According to the commandment of the LORD they were numbered by the hand of Moses, every one according to his service, and according to his burden: thus were they numbered of him, as the LORD commanded Moses.

Study Notes for Numbers 4
Verse 3
thirty years old and upward even until fifty — The age of service is repeated for each family (vv.23, 30, 35, 39, 43, 47), and in David’s day the Levites were still ‘numbered from the age of thirty years and upward’ (1 Chr 23:3). At fifty a Levite stops this work but not his duty: he ‘shall minister with their brethren … to keep the charge’ (Num 8:25–26).
Verse 4
the most holy things — Qodesh qodashim, holy of holies, is what the Kohathites carry: Num 3:31 lists ‘the ark, and the table, and the candlestick, and the altars, and the vessels of the sanctuary’. The rest of the chapter says how they may touch them, for the aim is ‘that they may live, and not die’ (v.19).
Verse 5
the covering vail — The veil that hung before the ark, and ‘shall divide … between the holy place and the most holy’ (Ex 26:33), is taken down by Aaron and his sons and laid over the ark, so the ark is never uncovered as the camp moves. It is the ‘second veil’ of Heb 9:3, behind which stood the Holiest of all.
Verse 6
a cloth wholly of blue — Over the veil go a covering of badgers’ skins (tachash) and then a cloth ‘wholly of blue’ (techeleth). The ark alone has the blue outermost; the table, lampstand and altars end in badgers’ skins (vv.8, 10, 11, 12, 14). Its staves stay in their rings, for ‘they shall not be taken from it’ (Ex 25:15).
Verse 15
they shall not touch any holy thing — The Kohathites come only after the priests have covered everything, and then they ‘bear’ it (nasa), their ‘burden’ (massa) being named from the same root. No wagons are given them, ‘that they should bear upon their shoulders’ (Num 7:9). Touching means death, as it did for Uzzah in 2 Sam 6:6–7.
Verse 16
the office of Eleazar — Eleazar and Ithamar are the sons of Aaron who remain after Nadab and Abihu died before the LORD (Num 3:4). Eleazar has the oil for the lamps (Lev 24:2), the sweet incense, the daily meat offering, and the anointing oil. ‘Office’ and ‘oversight’ are one word, pequddah, charge.
Verse 18
Cut ye not off the tribe — The Kohathites carry what is most holy and so stand nearest to death, and the charge is given to Moses and Aaron: karat, to cut off, is the verb used of one cut off from his people. The remedy is in v.19: Aaron and his sons go in first and ‘appoint them every one to his service and to his burden’.
Verse 20
shall not go in to see — Even a look is forbidden: ‘lest they die’. At Sinai the people were told not to ‘break through unto the LORD to gaze’ (Ex 19:21), and the men of Bethshemesh were smitten ‘because they had looked into the ark of the LORD’ (1 Sam 6:19). Only the priests go in to the holy things.
Verse 23
to perform the service — The Gershonites are numbered at the same age as the Kohathites (vv.3, 35). ‘Perform the service’ is tsaba, the verb of an army’s service and from the word for ‘host’ in v.3, so the work of the tabernacle is spoken of as service in a host. Verse 47 names the two kinds, ‘the service of the ministry, and the service of the burden’.
Verse 25
the curtains of the tabernacle — The Gershonites bear the curtains, the tent and its covering, the upper covering of badgers’ skins (Ex 26:14), and the door hanging (masak, a screen, the same word used of the ‘covering’ of the veil in v.5). Because the load is cloth, Moses gave them ‘two wagons and four oxen’ (Num 7:7). The Kohathites had none.
Verse 28
under the hand of Ithamar — Ithamar, Aaron’s other surviving son (Num 3:4), is set over the Gershonites, and over the Merarites at v.33; Eleazar has the oversight of the tabernacle itself (v.16). The wagons for the Merarites were also given ‘under the hand of Ithamar’ (Num 7:8). ‘Charge’ is mishmereth, the thing kept.
Verse 31
the boards of the tabernacle — The Merarites carry the frame: ‘the boards … and the bars … and the pillars … and sockets’, the boards being of shittim wood (Ex 26:15). Moses gave them ‘four wagons and eight oxen’ (Num 7:8), twice the Gershonites’ share. Each article is assigned ‘by name’ (v.32), so that each is accounted for.
Verse 36
two thousand seven hundred and fifty — The Kohathites of service age (vv.34–35). They are more than the Gershonites (v.40, 2,630) and fewer than the Merarites (v.44, 3,200). Their load is the furniture of the sanctuary, borne on shoulders without wagons (Num 7:9).
Verse 40
two thousand and six hundred and thirty — The Gershonites of service age (vv.38–39), the smallest of the three families. Their load is cloth and hangings (vv.24–26), carried with the two wagons and four oxen that Moses gave them (Num 7:7). The sum of the three is given in v.48.
Verse 44
three thousand and two hundred — The Merarites of service age (vv.42–43), the largest of the three companies. They carry the frame of the tabernacle and the pillars of the court, and were given four wagons and eight oxen (Num 7:8). Each article is reckoned to them by name (v.32).
Verse 48
eight thousand and five hundred and fourscore — The total of the three: 2,750 Kohathites, 2,630 Gershonites and 3,200 Merarites. Of all the Levites numbered from a month old, ‘twenty and two thousand’ (Num 3:39), these are the 8,580 of service age, from thirty to fifty.
Verse 49
every one according to his service, and according to his burden — The words repeat v.19, where Aaron’s sons ‘appoint them every one to his service and to his burden’. The numbering was ‘by the hand of Moses’ and, as the verse closes, ‘as the LORD commanded Moses’, so the assignment of each man’s load rested on the LORD’s command and not on the choice of the families.
