  1. But suppose that servant is wicked and says in his heart, ‘My master will be away a long time.’

  2. And he begins to beat his fellow servants and to eat and drink with drunkards.

  3. The master of that servant will come on a day he does not expect and at an hour he does not anticipate.

  4. Then he will cut him to pieces and assign him a place with the hypocrites, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

  5. Later the other virgins arrived and said, ‘Lord, lord, open the door for us!’

  6. But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I do not know you.’

  7. So he thought to himself, ‘What shall I do, since I have nowhere to store my crops?’

  8. Then he said, ‘This is what I will do: I will tear down my barns and will build bigger ones, and there I will store up all my grain and my goods.

  9. Then I will say to myself, “You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take it easy. Eat, drink, and be merry!”’

  10. But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be required of you. Then who will own what you have accumulated?’

  11. “Make every effort to enter through the narrow door. For many, I tell you, will try to enter and will not be able.

  12. After the master of the house gets up and shuts the door, you will stand outside knocking and saying, ‘Lord, open the door for us.’ But he will reply, ‘I do not know where you are from.’

  13. Then you will say, ‘We ate and drank with you, and you taught in our streets.’

  14. The Pharisee stood by himself and prayed, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like the other men—swindlers, evildoers, adulterers—or even like this tax collector.

  15. “We are Abraham’s descendants,” they answered. “We have never been slaves to anyone. How can You say we will be set free?”

  16. You are doing the works of your father.” “We are not illegitimate children,” they declared. “Our only Father is God Himself.”

  17. While people are saying, “Peace and security,” destruction will come upon them suddenly, like labor pains on a pregnant woman, and they will not escape.

  18. and with every wicked deception directed against those who are perishing, because they refused the love of the truth that would have saved them.

  19. For this reason God will send them a powerful delusion so that they believe the lie,

  20. Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business, and make a profit.”

  21. “Where is the promise of His coming?” they will ask. “Ever since our fathers fell asleep, everything continues as it has from the beginning of creation.”

  22. You say, ‘I am rich; I have grown wealthy and need nothing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked.
