  1. Then a man who lived there replied, “And who is their father?” So the saying became a proverb: “Is Saul also among the prophets?”

  2. As the old proverb says, ‘Wickedness proceeds from the wicked.’ But my hand will never be against you.

  3. Against whom has the king of Israel come out? Whom are you pursuing? A dead dog? A flea?

  4. Abner was furious over Ish-bosheth’s accusation. “Am I the head of a dog that belongs to Judah?” he asked. “All this time I have been loyal to the house of your father Saul, to his brothers, and to his friends. I have not delivered you into the hand of David, but now you accuse me of wrongdoing with this woman!

  5. Then the woman said, “Long ago they used to say, ‘Seek counsel at Abel,’ and that is how disputes were settled.

  6. And the king of Israel replied, “Tell him: ‘The one putting on his armor should not boast like one taking it off.’”

  7. These are the proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel,

  8. for gaining wisdom and discipline, for comprehending words of insight,

  9. and for receiving instruction in wise living and in righteousness, justice, and equity.

  10. To impart prudence to the simple and knowledge and discretion to the young,

  11. How futile it is to spread the net where any bird can see it!

  12. These are additional proverbs of Solomon, which were copied by the men of Hezekiah king of Judah:

  13. “In those days, it will no longer be said: ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the teeth of the children are set on edge.’

  14. “Son of man, what is this proverb that you have in the land of Israel: ‘The days go by, and every vision fails’?

  15. Therefore tell them that this is what the Lord GOD says: ‘I will put an end to this proverb, and in Israel they will no longer recite it.’ But say to them: ‘The days are at hand when every vision will be fulfilled.

  16. Behold, all who speak in proverbs will quote this proverb about you: ‘Like mother, like daughter.’

  17. “What do you people mean by quoting this proverb about the land of Israel: ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the teeth of the children are set on edge’?

  18. As surely as I live, declares the Lord GOD, you will no longer quote this proverb in Israel.

  19. Behold, every soul belongs to Me; both father and son are Mine. The soul who sins is the one who will die.

  20. And it shall be like people, like priest. I will punish both of them for their ways and repay them for their deeds.

  21. Make a tree good and its fruit will be good, or make a tree bad and its fruit will be bad; for a tree is known by its fruit.

  22. Jesus said to them, “Surely you will quote this proverb to Me: ‘Physician, heal yourself! Do here in Your hometown what we have heard that You did in Capernaum.’”

  23. For each tree is known by its own fruit. Indeed, figs are not gathered from thornbushes, nor grapes from brambles.

  24. Salt is good, but if the salt loses its savor, with what will it be seasoned?

  25. “Can anything good come from Nazareth?” Nathanael asked. “Come and see,” said Philip.
