  1. Then the LORD said to me, “Take a large scroll and write on it with an ordinary stylus: Maher-shalal-hash-baz.

  7. “Why then,” they asked, “did Moses order a man to give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?”

  8. Jesus replied, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because of your hardness of heart; but it was not this way from the beginning.

  9. “The kingdom of heaven is like a king who prepared a wedding banquet for his son.

  10. He sent his servants to call those he had invited to the banquet, but they refused to come.

  11. But when the king came in to see the guests, he spotted a man who was not dressed in wedding clothes.

  12. ‘Friend,’ he asked, ‘how did you get in here without wedding clothes?’ But the man was speechless.

  13. Jesus answered, “You are mistaken because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God.

  14. In the resurrection, people will neither marry nor be given in marriage. Instead, they will be like the angels in heaven.

  15. “At that time the kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.

  16. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise.

  17. The foolish ones took their lamps but did not take along any extra oil.

  18. But the wise ones took oil in flasks along with their lamps.

  19. When the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep.

  20. At midnight the cry rang out: ‘Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him!’

  21. Then all the virgins woke up and trimmed their lamps.

  22. The foolish ones said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your oil; our lamps are going out.’

  23. ‘No,’ said the wise ones, ‘or there may not be enough for both us and you. Instead, go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.’

  24. But while they were on their way to buy it, the bridegroom arrived. Those who were ready went in with him to the wedding banquet, and the door was shut.

  25. Jesus said to them, “Aren’t you mistaken, because you do not know the Scriptures or the power of God?
