  1. If my heart has been enticed by my neighbor’s wife, or I have lurked at his door,

  2. then may my own wife grind grain for another, and may other men sleep with her.

  3. For that would be a heinous crime, an iniquity to be judged.

  4. For it is a fire that burns down to Abaddon; it would root out my entire harvest.

  5. to keep you from the evil woman, from the smooth tongue of the adulteress.

  6. Do not lust in your heart for her beauty or let her captivate you with her eyes.

  7. These things took place as examples to keep us from craving evil things as they did.

  8. Do not be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written: “The people sat down to eat and to drink, and got up to indulge in revelry.”

  9. For the time will come when men will not tolerate sound doctrine, but with itching ears they will gather around themselves teachers to suit their own desires.

  10. So they will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.

  11. But each one is tempted when by his own evil desires he is lured away and enticed.

  12. Then after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

  13. What causes conflicts and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from the passions at war within you?

  14. You crave what you do not have; you kill and covet, but are unable to obtain it. You quarrel and fight. You do not have, because you do not ask.

  15. And when you do ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may squander it on your pleasures.

  16. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not from the Father but from the world.

  17. The world is passing away, along with its desires; but whoever does the will of God remains forever.
