  1. That day David fled from Saul and went to Achish king of Gath.

  2. But the servants of Achish said to him, “Is this not David, the king of the land? Did they not sing about him in their dances, saying: ‘Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands’?”

  3. Now David took these words to heart and was very much afraid of Achish the king of Gath.

  4. So he changed his behavior before them and feigned madness in their hands; he scratched on the doors of the gate and let his saliva run down his beard.

  5. Then Achish said to his servants, “Look, you can see that the man is insane! Why have you brought him to me?

  6. Am I in need of madmen, that you have brought this man to rave in my presence? Must this man come into my house?”

  7. So David set out with his six hundred men and went to Achish son of Maoch, the king of Gath.

  8. David and his men settled in Gath with Achish. Each man had his family with him, and David had his two wives: Ahinoam of Jezreel and Abigail of Carmel, the widow of Nabal.

  9. And when Saul learned that David had fled to Gath, he no longer searched for him.

  10. Then David said to Achish, “If I have found favor in your eyes, let me be assigned a place in one of the outlying towns, so I can live there. For why should your servant live in the royal city with you?”

  11. That day Achish gave him Ziklag, and to this day it still belongs to the kings of Judah.

  12. And the time that David lived in Philistine territory amounted to a year and four months.
