  1. And it came to pass, as he sat at meat in the house, behold, many publicans and sinners came and sat down with Jesus and his disciples.

  2. And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Teacher with the publicans and sinners?

  3. But when he heard it, he said, They that are whole have no need of a physician, but they that are sick.

  4. But go ye and learn what this meaneth, I desire mercy, and not sacrifice: for I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.

  5. But the Pharisees, when they saw it, said unto him, Behold, thy disciples do that which it is not lawful to do upon the sabbath.

  6. But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was hungry, and they that were with him;

  7. how he entered into the house of God, and ate the showbread, which it was not lawful for him to eat, neither for them that were with him, but only for the priests?

  8. Or have ye not read in the law, that on the sabbath day the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are guiltless?

  9. But I say unto you, that one greater than the temple is here.

  10. But if ye had known what this meaneth, I desire mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless.

  11. Then there come to Jesus from Jerusalem Pharisees and scribes, saying,

  12. Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.

  13. And he answered and said unto them, Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God because of your tradition?

  14. For God said, Honor thy father and thy mother: and, He that speaketh evil of father or mother, let him die the death.

  15. But ye say, Whosoever shall say to his father or his mother, That wherewith thou mightest have been profited by me is given to God;

  16. he shall not honor his father. And ye have made void the word of God because of your tradition.

  17. Ye hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying,

  18. This people honoreth me with their lips; But their heart is far from me.

  19. But in vain do they worship me, Teachingas theirdoctrines the precepts of men.

  20. And he called to him the multitude, and said unto them, Hear, and understand:

  21. Not that which entereth into the mouth defileth the man; but that which proceedeth out of the mouth, this defileth the man.

  22. Then came the disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, when they heard this saying?

  23. But he answered and said, Every plant which my heavenly Father planted not, shall be rooted up.

  24. Let them alone: they are blind guides. And if the blind guide the blind, both shall fall into a pit.

  25. And Peter answered and said unto him, Declare unto us the parable.
