  1. Their soul abhorreth all manner of food; And they draw near unto the gates of death.

  2. Then they cry unto Jehovah in their trouble, And he saveth them out of their distresses.

  3. He sendeth his word, and healeth them, And delivereth them from their destructions.

  4. Oh that men would praise Jehovah for his lovingkindness, And for his wonderful works to the children of men!

  6. These see the works of Jehovah, And his wonders in the deep.

  7. For he commandeth, and raiseth the stormy wind, Which lifteth up the waves thereof.

  8. They mount up to the heavens, they go down again to the depths: Their soul melteth away because of trouble.

  9. They reel to and fro, and stagger like a drunken man, And are at their wits’ end.

  10. Then they cry unto Jehovah in their trouble, And he bringeth them out of their distresses.

  11. He maketh the storm a calm, So that the waves thereof are still.

  12. Then are they glad because they are quiet; So he bringeth them unto their desired haven.

  13. My son, despise not the chastening of Jehovah; Neither be weary of his reproof:

  14. For whom Jehovah loveth he reproveth, Even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

  15. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows; yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

  16. But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities; the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.

  17. For I will not contend for ever, neither will I be always wroth; for the spirit would faint before me, and the souls that I have made.

  18. For the iniquity of his covetousness was I wroth, and smote him; I hid my face and was wroth; and he went on backsliding in the way of his heart.

  19. I have seen his ways, and will heal him: I will lead him also, and restore comforts unto him and to his mourners.

  20. I have surely heard Ephraim bemoaning himself thus, Thou hast chastised me, and I was chastised, as a calf unaccustomed to the yoke: turn thou me, and I shall be turned; for thou art Jehovah my God.

  21. Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.

  22. Is Ephraim my dear son? is he a darling child? for as often as I speak against him, I do earnestly remember him still: therefore my heart yearneth for him; I will surely have mercy upon him, saith Jehovah.

  23. and ye have forgotten the exhortation which reasoneth with you as with sons, My son, regard not lightly the chastening of the Lord, Nor faint when thou art reproved of him;

  24. For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, And scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

  25. It is for chastening that ye endure; God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is there whom his father chasteneth not?
