  1. In that day there came near to him Sadducees, who are saying there is not a rising again, and they questioned him, saying,

  2. `Teacher, Moses said, If any one may die not having children, his brother shall marry his wife, and shall raise up seed to his brother.

  3. `And there were with us seven brothers, and the first having married did die, and not having seed, he left his wife to his brother;

  4. in like manner also the second, and the third, unto the seventh,

  5. and last of all died also the woman;

  6. therefore in the rising again, of which of the seven shall she be wife--for all had her?'

  7. And Jesus answering said to them, `Ye go astray, not knowing the Writings, nor the power of God;

  8. for in the rising again they do not marry, nor are they given in marriage, but are as messengers of God in heaven.

  9. `And concerning the rising again of the dead, did ye not read that which was spoken to you by God, saying,

  10. I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not a God of dead men, but of living.'

  11. And having heard, the multitudes were astonished at his teaching;

  12. and the Pharisees, having heard that he did silence the Sadducees, were gathered together unto him;

  13. And the Sadducees come unto him, who say there is not a rising again, and they questioned him, saying,

  14. `Teacher, Moses wrote to us, that if any one's brother may die, and may leave a wife, and may leave no children, that his brother may take his wife, and raise up seed to his brother.

  15. `There were then seven brothers, and the first took a wife, and dying, he left no seed;

  16. and the second took her, and died, neither left he seed, and the third in like manner,

  17. and the seven took her, and left no seed, last of all died also the woman;

  18. in the rising again, then, whenever they may rise, of which of them shall she be wife--for the seven had her as wife?'

  19. And Jesus answering said to them, `Do ye not because of this go astray, not knowing the Writings, nor the power of God?

  20. for when they may rise out of the dead, they neither marry nor are they given in marriage, but are as messengers who are in the heavens.

  21. `And concerning the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the Book of Moses (at The Bush), how God spake to him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob;

  22. he is not the God of dead men, but a God of living men; ye then go greatly astray.'

  23. And certain of the Sadducees, who are denying that there is a rising again, having come near, questioned him,

  24. saying, `Teacher, Moses wrote to us, If any one's brother may die, having a wife, and he may die childless--that his brother may take the wife, and may raise up seed to his brother.

  25. `There were, then, seven brothers, and the first having taken a wife, died childless,
