  1. but to Hannah he gave a double portion; for he loved Hannah, but the LORD had shut up her womb.

  9. “Talk no more so exceeding proudly. Don’t let arrogance come out of your mouth, For the LORD is a God of knowledge. By him actions are weighed.

  10. “The bows of the mighty men are broken. Those who stumbled are armed with strength.

  11. Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread. Those who were hungry are satisfied. Yes, the barren has borne seven. She who has many children languishes.

  12. “The LORD kills, and makes alive. He brings down to Sheol, and brings up.

  13. The LORD makes poor, and makes rich. He brings low, he also lifts up.

  14. He raises up the poor out of the dust. He lifts up the needy from the dunghill, To make them sit with princes, and inherit the throne of glory. For the pillars of the earth are the LORD’s. He has set the world on them.

  15. He will keep the feet of his holy ones, but the wicked shall be put to silence in darkness; for no man shall prevail by strength.

  16. Those who strive with the LORD shall be broken to pieces. He will thunder against them in the sky. “The LORD will judge the ends of the earth. He will give strength to his king, and exalt the horn of his anointed.”

  17. saying, “The scribes and the Pharisees sat on Moses’ seat.

  18. All things therefore whatever they tell you to observe, observe and do, but don’t do their works; for they say, and don’t do.

  19. For they bind heavy burdens that are grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not lift a finger to help them.

  20. But all their works they do to be seen by men. They make their tefillin broad, enlarge the fringes of their garments,

  21. and love the place of honor at feasts, the best seats in the synagogues,

  22. the salutations in the marketplaces, and to be called ‘Rabbi, Rabbi’ by men.

  23. But don’t you be called ‘Rabbi,’ for one is your Rabbi, the Messiah, and all of you are brothers.

  24. Call no man on the earth your father, for one is your Father, he who is in heaven.

  25. Neither be called masters, for one is your master, the Messiah.
