  1. Howbeit thou art just in all that is brought upon us; for thou hast done right, but we have done wickedly:

  2. Neither have our kings, our princes, our priests, nor our fathers, kept thy law, nor hearkened unto thy commandments and thy testimonies, wherewith thou didst testify against them.

  3. For they have not served thee in their kingdom, and in thy great goodness that thou gavest them, and in the large and fat land which thou gavest before them, neither turned they from their wicked works.

  4. Behold, we are servants this day, and for the land that thou gavest unto our fathers to eat the fruit thereof and the good thereof, behold, we are servants in it:

  5. And it yieldeth much increase unto the kings whom thou hast set over us because of our sins: also they have dominion over our bodies, and over our cattle, at their pleasure, and we are in great distress.

  6. And because of all this we make a sure covenant, and write it; and our princes, Levites, and priests, seal unto it.

  7. I have sinned; what shall I do unto thee, O thou preserver of men? why hast thou set me as a mark against thee, so that I am a burden to myself?

  8. If I justify myself, mine own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me perverse.

  9. ¶ How many are mine iniquities and sins? make me to know my transgression and my sin.

  10. Behold, I am vile; what shall I answer thee? I will lay mine hand upon my mouth.

  11. I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee.

  12. Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.

  13. I acknowledged my sin unto thee, and mine iniquity have I not hid. I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the LORD; and thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah.

  14. There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine anger; neither is there any rest in my bones because of my sin.

  15. For mine iniquities are gone over mine head: as an heavy burden they are too heavy for me.

  16. For I will declare mine iniquity; I will be sorry for my sin.

  17. ¶ Withhold not thou thy tender mercies from me, O LORD: let thy lovingkindness and thy truth continually preserve me.

  18. For innumerable evils have compassed me about: mine iniquities have taken hold upon me, so that I am not able to look up; they are more than the hairs of mine head: therefore my heart faileth me.

  19. I said, LORD, be merciful unto me: heal my soul; for I have sinned against thee.

  20. Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.

  21. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.

  22. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.

  23. Behold, I was shapen in iniquity; and in sin did my mother conceive me.

  24. O God, thou knowest my foolishness; and my sins are not hid from thee.

  25. ¶ Thus my heart was grieved, and I was pricked in my reins.
