  1. ¶ Hear the word of the LORD, O ye nations, and declare it in the isles afar off, and say, He that scattered Israel will gather him, and keep him, as a shepherd doth his flock.

  2. Thus saith the LORD of hosts; Again in this place, which is desolate without man and without beast, and in all the cities thereof, shall be an habitation of shepherds causing their flocks to lie down.

  3. In the cities of the mountains, in the cities of the vale, and in the cities of the south, and in the land of Benjamin, and in the places about Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah, shall the flocks pass again under the hands of him that telleth them, saith the LORD.

  4. Thus saith the LORD; As the shepherd taketh out of the mouth of the lion two legs, or a piece of an ear; so shall the children of Israel be taken out that dwell in Samaria in the corner of a bed, and in Damascus in a couch.

  5. ¶ And thou, O tower of the flock, the strong hold of the daughter of Zion, unto thee shall it come, even the first dominion; the kingdom shall come to the daughter of Jerusalem.

  6. And before him shall be gathered all nations: and he shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats:

  7. ¶ And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night.

  8. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.

  9. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.

  10. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

  11. And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.

  12. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying,

  13. Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

  14. And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.

  15. And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.

  16. And when they had seen it, they made known abroad the saying which was told them concerning this child.

  17. And all they that heard it wondered at those things which were told them by the shepherds.

  18. But Mary kept all these things, and pondered them in her heart.

  19. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, as it was told unto them.

  20. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.

  21. To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.

  22. And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.

  23. And a stranger will they not follow, but will flee from him: for they know not the voice of strangers.
