¶ To the chief Musician on Neginoth upon Sheminith, A Psalm of David. O LORD, rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.
¶ The law of the LORD is perfect, converting the soul: the testimony of the LORD is sure, making wise the simple.
The statutes of the LORD are right, rejoicing the heart: the commandment of the LORD is pure, enlightening the eyes.
The fear of the LORD is clean, enduring for ever: the judgments of the LORD are true and righteous altogether.
More to be desired are they than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb.
Moreover by them is thy servant warned: and in keeping of them there is great reward.
When thou with rebukes dost correct man for iniquity, thou makest his beauty to consume away like a moth: surely every man is vanity. Selah.
These things hast thou done, and I kept silence; thou thoughtest that I was altogether such an one as thyself: but I will reprove thee, and set them in order before thine eyes.
¶ Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O LORD, and teachest him out of thy law;
¶ Before I was afflicted I went astray: but now have I kept thy word.
¶ It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.
¶ I know, O LORD, that thy judgments are right, and that thou in faithfulness hast afflicted me.
Let the righteous smite me; it shall be a kindness: and let him reprove me; it shall be an excellent oil, which shall not break my head: for yet my prayer also shall be in their calamities.
They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof.
And say, How have I hated instruction, and my heart despised reproof;
For the commandment is a lamp; and the law is light; and reproofs of instruction are the way of life:
He that reproveth a scorner getteth to himself shame: and he that rebuketh a wicked man getteth himself a blot.
Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee.
¶ He is in the way of life that keepeth instruction: but he that refuseth reproof erreth.
¶ Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish.
¶ Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured.
¶ A fool despiseth his father's instruction: but he that regardeth reproof is prudent.
¶ Correction is grievous unto him that forsaketh the way: and he that hateth reproof shall die.
¶ A scorner loveth not one that reproveth him: neither will he go unto the wise.
¶ The ear that heareth the reproof of life abideth among the wise.
