  1. And he said, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hosts: because the children of Israel have forsaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and slain thy prophets with the sword; and I, even I only, am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.

  2. And the LORD said unto him, Go, return on thy way to the wilderness of Damascus: and when thou comest, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria:

  3. And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.

  4. And it shall come to pass, that him that escapeth the sword of Hazael shall Jehu slay: and him that escapeth from the sword of Jehu shall Elisha slay.

  5. Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.

  6. And he said, Take the arrows. And he took them. And he said unto the king of Israel, Smite upon the ground. And he smote thrice, and stayed.

  7. And the man of God was wroth with him, and said, Thou shouldest have smitten five or six times; then hadst thou smitten Syria till thou hadst consumed it: whereas now thou shalt smite Syria but thrice.

  8. Behold, thou hast instructed many, and thou hast strengthened the weak hands.

  9. Thy words have upholden him that was falling, and thou hast strengthened the feeble knees.

  10. But now it is come upon thee, and thou faintest; it toucheth thee, and thou art troubled.

  11. Is not this thy fear, thy confidence, thy hope, and the uprightness of thy ways?

  12. If I had called, and he had answered me; yet would I not believe that he had hearkened unto my voice.

  13. For he breaketh me with a tempest, and multiplieth my wounds without cause.

  14. He will not suffer me to take my breath, but filleth me with bitterness.

  15. If I speak of strength, lo, he is strong: and if of judgment, who shall set me a time to plead?

  16. If I justify myself, mine own mouth shall condemn me: if I say, I am perfect, it shall also prove me perverse.

  17. Though I were perfect, yet would I not know my soul: I would despise my life.

  18. ¶ This is one thing, therefore I said it, He destroyeth the perfect and the wicked.

  19. If the scourge slay suddenly, he will laugh at the trial of the innocent.

  20. Therefore am I troubled at his presence: when I consider, I am afraid of him.

  21. For God maketh my heart soft, and the Almighty troubleth me:

  22. Because I was not cut off before the darkness, neither hath he covered the darkness from my face.

  23. I cry unto thee, and thou dost not hear me: I stand up, and thou regardest me not.

  24. Thou art become cruel to me: with thy strong hand thou opposest thyself against me.

  25. Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.
