2 Thessalonians 1:1

Paul, and Silvanus, and Timotheus, unto the church of the Thessalonians in God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ:

The first letter that was written to the them, where it comes to the place where the Apostle speaks of the role of the elect who are still alive on the Day of Judgment, saying, "Then we who are still alive, who are left, suddenly will be caught up with them to meet Christ in the air" (1 Thess 4:17), they were upset and utterly terrified, since they thought that the Apostle was saying that in his own lifetime, and thus in theirs, too, the Lord would come in judgment. They were afraid that they would be cast into the dungeon of eternal punishment with the Devil, because, as latecomers to the faith, they were imperfect. So the Apostle wrote this second letter to them as soon as he learned of their despair. In it he indicated to them that the Day of Judgment was not yet imminent in their lifetime. He also announces the coming and the death of the Antichrist.

2 Thessalonians 1:5

Which is a manifest token of the righteous judgment of God, that ye may be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, for which ye also suffer:

He calls the judgment of God "just" because then God will judge the world equally.

2 Thessalonians 1:6

Seeing it is a righteous thing with God to recompense tribulation to them that trouble you;

If indeed,
a conjunction of cause, is used in this case not for the purpose of doubting but for affirmation, as if he were saying, "Since it is just for God to do this."

2 Thessalonians 1:7

And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels,

is revealed that is, manifestation.

so that you may be patient among the adversities of the world, just as Christ bore patiently the reproaches, the mockeries, the scourging, and the Cross. Or, as some manuscripts have it, "in the expectation of Christ," that you may await the coming of Christ in judgment.

At the end of every letter he wrote his name both in Hebrew letters and in the Greek, lest what may come from one of the false apostles may be allowed to corrupt them.

Jonah 1:1

Now the word of the LORD came unto Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,

The Hebrews say that Jonah was the son of a widow in Zarephath; Elijah raised him from the dead, and when he had been returned to his mother, she gave thanks, and said, "Now by this I know that you are a man of the Lord, and the word of the Lord in your mouth is true." (1Kings 17:24)

But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish: so he paid the fare thereof, and went down into it, to go with them unto Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

In Hebrew, however, they speak generally of the sea as "Tharsis." Therefore, the prophet did not wish to flee to any particular place, but he embarked upon a ship which could take him anywhere, so long as he could hurry, not caring where chance led him.

Jonah, therefore, coming from the mountainous country of Judea to the sea coast and the plains, is rightly said to have went down.

Jonah 1:5 · 3 passages

Then the mariners were afraid, and cried every man unto his god, and cast forth the wares that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it of them. But Jonah was gone down into the sides of the ship; and he lay, and was fast asleep.

he slept because he was overcome by weariness, just as we also read that the Apostles, overcome by sorrow, were pressed down by sleep in the Passion of the Lord (Mk 14:37-41).

From this we understand that God is feared and perceived by all men, although they may be seduced by false religions from the one and true god to many gods.

This is done in the greatest danger, in order that the ship, once lightened, may be borne up by the waves more easily.

Jonah 1:7

And they said every one to his fellow, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know for whose cause this evil is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell upon Jonah.

Because they saw that the storm was greater than usual, they knew those things did not happen naturally; nor indeed could those who navigated at such a time neglect the causes of the winds and the waves, and therefore by means of the lots they sought the origin of the shipwreck.

Jonah 2:1

Then Jonah prayed unto the LORD his God out of the fish's belly,

He prepared the fish, that is, He made it come next to the ship, in order that it might take Jonah in its mouth when he was thrown overboard.

Jonah 2:3

For thou hadst cast me into the deep, in the midst of the seas; and the floods compassed me about: all thy billows and thy waves passed over me.

he cried with the whole passion of his heart, according to the Apostle who says, "You have received a spirit of adoption as sons, by virtue of which we cry, 'Abba, Father!'"

Jonah 2:5

The waters compassed me about, even to the soul: the depth closed me round about, the weeds were wrapped about my head.

Jonah either says this wishfully, or with a certain trust he promises himself that he will return to Jerusalem and see the temple of the Lord.

Jonah 2:7

When my soul fainted within me I remembered the LORD: and my prayer came in unto thee, into thine holy temple.

Although he ought to have been corrupted and digested in the belly of the whale and diffused through the veins and joints of the fish, he came out safe and whole.
calling the God who is common to all his own and personal God; because of the magnitude of such great favor, he especially feels that God is his God ad Lord.
