  1. You shall not drink wine nor any thing that may make drunk, thou nor thy sons, when you enter into the tabernacle of the testimony, lest you die. Because it is an everlasting precept; through your generations:

  2. They shall abstain from wine, and from every thing that may make a man drunk. They shall not drink vinegar of wine, or of any other drink, nor any thing that is pressed out of the grape: nor shall they eat grapes either fresh or dried.

  3. Now therefore beware, and drink no wine nor strong drink, and eat not any unclean thing.

  4. Wine is a luxurious thing, and drunkenness riotous: whosoever is delighted therewith, shall not be wise.

  5. He that loveth good cheer, shall be in want: he that loveth wine, and fat things, shall not be rich.

  6. Who hath woe? whose father hath woe? who hath contentions? who falls into pits? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?

  7. Surely they that pass their time in wine, and study to drink off their cups.

  8. Look not upon the wine when it is yellow, when the colour thereof shineth in the glass: it goeth in pleasantly,

  9. But in the end, it will bite like a snake, and will spread abroad poison like a basilisk.

  10. Give not to kings, O Lamuel, give not wine to kings: because there is no secret where drunkenness reigneth:

  11. And lest they drink and forget judgments, and pervert the cause of the children of the poor.

  12. Woe to you that rise up early in the morning to follow drunkenness, and to drink in the evening, to be inflamed with wine.

  13. Woe to you that are mighty to drink wine, and stout men at drunkenness.

  14. They shall not drink wine with a song: the drink shall be bitter to them that drink it.

  15. Woe to the crown of pride, to the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower the glory his joy, who were on the head of the fat valley, staggering with wine.

  16. The crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim shall be trodden under feet.

  17. But these also have been ignorant through wine, and through drunkenness have erred: the priest and the prophet have been ignorant through drunkenness, they are swallowed up with wine, they have gone astray in drunkenness, they have not known him that seeth, they have been ignorant of judgment.

  18. To the prophets: My heart is broken within me, all my bones tremble: I am become as a drunken man, and as a man full of wine, at the presence of the Lord, and at the presence of his holy words.

  19. Go to the house of the Rechabites: and speak to them, and bring them into the house of the Lord, into one of the chambers of the treasures, and thou shalt give them wine to drink.

  20. And I took Jezonias the son of Jeremiah the son of Habsanias, and his brethren, and all his sons, and the whole house of the Rechabites.

  21. And I brought them into the house of the Lord, to the treasure house of the sons of Hanan, the son of Jegedelias the man of God, which was by the treasure house of the princes, above the treasure of Maasias the son of Sellum, who was keeper of the entry.

  22. And I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites pots full of wine, and cups: and I said to them: Drink ye wine.

  23. And they answered : We will not drink wine: because Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, commanded us, saying: You shall drink no wine, neither you, nor your children, for ever:

  24. Neither shall ye build houses, nor sow reed, nor plant vineyards, nor have any: but you shall dwell in tents all your days, that you may live many days upon the face of the earth, in which you are strangers.

  25. Therefore we have obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, in all things that he commanded us: so as to drink no wine all our days: neither we, nor our wives, nor our sons, nor our daughters:
