  1. At that time Laban was gone to shear his sheep, and Rachel stole away her father's idols.

  2. And Jacob having called together all his household, said: Cast away the strange gods that are among you, and be cleansed, and change your garments.

  3. So they gave him all the strange gods they had, and the earrings which were in their ears: and he buried them under the turpentine tree, that is behind the city of Sichem.

  4. And he spoke thus to the people: Thus saith the Lord the God of Israel: Your fathers dwelt of old on the other side of the river, Thare the father of Abraham, and Nachor: and they served strange gods.

  5. Now therefore, said he, put away strange gods from among you, and incline your hearts to the Lord the God of Israel.

  6. Forsaking him, and serving Baal and Astaroth

  7. And they did evil in the sight of the Lord, and they forgot their God, and served Baalim and Astaroth.

  8. And saying these things, they cast away out of their coasts all the idols of strange gods, and served the Lord their God: and he was touched with their miseries.

  9. And he separated also therein a little temple for the god, and made an ephod, and theraphim, that is to say, a priestly garment, and idols: and he filled the hand of one of his sons, and he became his priest.

  10. Where are the gods, whom thou hast made thee? let them arise and deliver thee in the time of thy affliction: for according to the number of thy cities were thy gods, O Juda.

  11. For according to the number of thy cities were thy gods, O Juda: and according to the number of the streets of Jerusalem thou hast set up altars of confusion, altars to offer sacrifice to Baalim.

  12. The tree was great and strong, and the height thereof reached unto heaven: the sight thereof was even to the ends of all the earth.
