  1. If any man sell his daughter to be a servant, she shall not go out as bondwomen are wont to go out.

  2. If she displease the eyes of her master to whom she was delivered, he shall let her go: but he shall have no power to sell her to a foreign nation, if he despise her.

  3. But if he have betrothed her to his son, he shall deal with her after the manner of daughters.

  4. And if he take another wife for him, he shall provide her a marriage, and raiment, neither shall he refuse the price of her chastity.

  5. Then came the daughters of Salphaad, the son of Hepher, the son of Galaad, the son of Machir, the son of Manasses, who was the son of Joseph: and their names are Maala, and Noa, and Hegla, and Melcha, and Thersa.

  6. And they stood before Moses and Eleazar the priest, and all the princes of the people at the door of the tabernacle of the covenant, and said:

  7. Our father died in the desert, and was not in the sedition, that was raised against the Lord under Core, but he died in his own sin: and he had no male children. Why is his name taken away out of his family, because he had no son? Give us a possession among the kinsmen of our father.

  8. And Moses referred their cause to the judgment of the Lord.

  9. And the Lord said to him:

  10. The daughters of Salphaad demand a just thing: Give them a possession among their father's kindred, and let them succeed him in his inheritance.

  11. And to the children of Israel thou shalt speak these things:

  12. When a man dieth without a son, his inheritance shall pass to his daughter.

  13. If he have no daughter, his brethren shall succeed him.

  14. And if he have no brethren, you shall give the inheritance to his father's brethren.

  15. But if he have no uncles by the father, the inheritance shall be given to them that are the next akin. And this shall be to the children of Israel sacred by a perpetual law, as the Lord hath commanded Moses.

  16. And the princes of the families of Galaad, the son of Machir, the son of Manasses, of the stock of the children of Joseph, came and spoke to Moses before the princes of Israel, and said:

  17. The Lord hath commanded thee, my lord, that thou shouldst divide the land by lot to the children of Israel, and that thou shouldst give to the daughters of Salphaad our brother the possession due to their father:

  18. Now if men of another tribe take them to wives, their possession will follow them, and being transferred to another tribe, will be a diminishing of our inheritance.

  19. And so it shall come to pass, that when the jubilee, the is, the fiftieth year of remission, is come, the distribution made by the lots shall be confounded, and the possession of the one shall pass to the others.

  20. Moses answered the children of Israel, and said by the command of the Lord: The tribe of the children of Joseph hath spoken rightly.

  21. And this is the law promulgated by the Lord touching the daughters of Salphaad: Let them marry to whom they will, only so that it be to men of their own tribe.

  22. Lest the possession of the children of Israel be mingled from tribe to tribe. For all men shall marry wives of their own tribe and kindred:

  23. And all women shall take husbands of the same tribe: that the inheritance may remain in the families.

  24. And that the tribes be not mingled one with another, but remain so

  25. As they were separated by the Lord. And the daughters of Salphaad did as was commanded:
