  1. And my heart thought with myself: and I rebuked the nobles and magistrates, and said to them: Do you every one exact usury of your brethren? And I gathered together a great assembly against them,

  2. And I said to them: We, as you know, have redeemed according to our ability our brethren the Jews, that were sold to the Gentiles: and will you then sell your brethren, for us to redeem them? And they held their peace, and found not what to answer.

  3. And I said to them: The thing you do is not good: why walk you not in the fear of our God, that we be not exposed to the reproaches of the Gentiles our enemies?

  4. They have driven away the ass of the fatherless, and have taken away the widow's ox for a pledge.

  5. They have overturned the way of the poor, and have oppressed together the meek of the earth.

  6. Others like wild asses in the desert go forth to their work: by watching for a prey they get bread for their children.

  7. They reap the field that is not their own, and gather the vintage of his vineyard whom by violence they have oppressed.

  8. They send men away naked, taking away their clothes who have no covering in the cold:

  9. Who are wet, with the showers of the mountains, and having no covering embrace the stones.

  10. They have violently robbed the fatherless, and stripped the poor common people.

  11. But when that servant was gone out, he found one of his fellow-servants that owed him an hundred pence: and laying hold of him, he throttled him, saying: Pay what thou owest.

  12. And his fellow-servant falling down, besought him, saying: Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.

  13. And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he paid the debt.
