And the king said to Berzellai: Come with me that thou mayest rest secure with me in Jerusalem.

And Berzellai said to the king: How many are the days of the years of my life, that I should go up with the king to Jerusalem?

I am this day fourscore years old, are my senses quick to discern sweet and bitter? or can meat or drink delight thy servant? or can I hear any more the voice of singing men and singing women? why should thy servant be a burden to my lord, the king?

I thy servant will go on a little way from the Jordan with thee: I need not this recompense.

But I beseech thee let thy servant return, and die in my own city, and be buried by the sepulchre of my father, and of my mother. But there is thy servant Chamaam, let him go with thee, my lord, the king, and do to him whatsoever seemeth good to thee.

And I have known that there was no better thing than to rejoice, and to do well in this life.

For every man that eateth and drinketh, and seeth good of his labour, this is the gift of God.

All the labour of man is for his mouth, but his soul shall not be filled.

What hath the wise man more than the fool? and what the poor man, but to go thither, where there is life?

Better it is to see what thou mayst desire, than to desire that which thou canst not know. But this also is vanity, and presumption of spirit.

Go then, and eat thy bread with joy, and drink thy wine with gladness: because thy works please God.

At all times let thy garments be white, and let not oil depart from thy head.

Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest, all the days of thy unsteady life, which are given to thee under the sun, all the time of thy vanity: for this is thy portion in life, and in thy labour wherewith thou labourest under the sun.

Let every man abide in the same calling in which he was called.

Wast thou called, being a bondman? Care not for it: but if thou mayest be made free, use it rather.

I speak not as it were for want. For I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, to be content therewith.

I know both how to be brought low, and I know how to abound (every where and in all things I am instructed): both to be full and to be hungry: both to abound and to suffer need.

But godliness with contentment is great gain.

For we brought nothing into this world: and certainly we can carry nothing out.

But having food and wherewith to be covered, with these we are content.
