  1. “You shall not spread a false report. Do not join the wicked by being a malicious witness.

  2. Suppose a man marries a woman, has relations with her, and comes to hate her,

  3. and he then accuses her of shameful conduct and gives her a bad name, saying, “I married this woman and had relations with her, but I discovered she was not a virgin.”

  4. Then the young woman’s father and mother shall bring the proof of her virginity to the city elders at the gate

  5. and say to the elders, “I gave my daughter in marriage to this man, but he has come to hate her.

  6. And now he has accused her of shameful conduct, saying, ‘I discovered that your daughter was not a virgin.’ But here is the proof of her virginity.” And they shall spread out the cloth before the city elders.

  7. Then the elders of that city shall take the man and punish him.

  8. They are also to fine him a hundred shekels of silver and give them to the young woman’s father, because this man has given a virgin of Israel a bad name. And she shall remain his wife; he must not divorce her as long as he lives.

  9. You will be hidden from the scourge of the tongue, and will not fear havoc when it comes.

  10. My visitor speaks falsehood; he gathers slander in his heart; he goes out and spreads it abroad.

  11. All who hate me whisper against me; they imagine the worst for me:

  12. “A vile disease has been poured into him; he will never get up from where he lies!”

  13. Even my close friend whom I trusted, the one who shared my bread, has lifted up his heel against me.

  14. You sit and malign your brother; you slander your own mother’s son.

  15. Whoever slanders his neighbor in secret, I will put to silence; the one with haughty eyes and a proud heart, I will not endure.

  16. The one who conceals hatred has lying lips, and whoever spreads slander is a fool.

  18. All are hardened rebels, walking around as slanderers. They are bronze and iron; all of them are corrupt.

  20. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed, and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice. They are gossips,

  21. slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant, and boastful. They invent new forms of evil; they disobey their parents.

  22. when we are slandered, we answer gently. Up to this moment we have become the scum of the earth, the refuse of the world.

  23. nor thieves, nor the greedy, nor drunkards, nor verbal abusers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God.

  24. For I am afraid that when I come, I may not find you as I wish, and you may not find me as you wish. I fear that there may be quarreling, jealousy, rage, rivalry, slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorder.

  25. Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. And if you judge the law, you are not a practitioner of the law, but a judge of it.
