  1. In those days Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim

  2. went to war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar).

  9. “Take a census of the whole congregation of Israel by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one.

  10. You and Aaron are to number those who are twenty years of age or older by their divisions—everyone who can serve in Israel’s army.

  11. The Levites, however, were not numbered along with them by the tribe of their fathers.

  12. For the LORD had said to Moses:

  13. “Do not number the tribe of Levi in the census with the other Israelites.

  14. Instead, you are to appoint the Levites over the tabernacle of the Testimony, all its furnishings, and everything in it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its articles, care for it, and camp around it.

  15. “The Israelites are to camp around the Tent of Meeting at a distance from it, each man under his standard, with the banners of his family.

  16. On the east side, toward the sunrise, the divisions of Judah are to camp under their standard:

  17. In the middle of the camps, the Tent of Meeting is to travel with the camp of the Levites. They are to set out in the order they encamped, each in his own place under his standard.

  18. On the west side, the divisions of Ephraim are to camp under their standard:

  19. Then the officers who were over the units of the army—the commanders of thousands and of hundreds—approached Moses

  20. and said, “Your servants have counted the soldiers under our command, and not one of us is missing.

  21. When you go out to war against your enemies and see horses, chariots, and an army larger than yours, do not be afraid of them; for the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, is with you.

  22. When you are about to go into battle, the priest is to come forward and address the army,

  23. saying to them, “Hear, O Israel, today you are going into battle with your enemies. Do not be fainthearted or afraid; do not be alarmed or terrified because of them.

  24. For the LORD your God goes with you to fight for you against your enemies, to give you the victory.”

  25. Furthermore, the officers are to address the army, saying, “Has any man built a new house and not dedicated it? Let him return home, or he may die in battle and another man dedicate it.
