  1. And Joseph’s master took him, and put him into the prison, the place where the king’s prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.

  2. But Jehovah was with Joseph, and showed kindness unto him, and gave him favor in the sight of the keeper of the prison.

  3. And the keeper of the prison committed to Joseph’s hand all the prisoners that were in the prison; and whatsoever they did there, he was the doer of it.

And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead; for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he hearkened not unto our voice: how will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead!

  10. But when David saw that his servants were whispering together, David perceived that the child was dead; and David said unto his servants, Is the child dead? And they said, He is dead.

  11. Then David arose from the earth, and washed, and anointed himself, and changed his apparel; and he came into the house of Jehovah, and worshipped: then he came to his own house; and when he required, they set bread before him, and he did eat.

  12. Then said his servants unto him, What thing is this that thou hast done? thou didst fast and weep for the child, while it was alive; but when the child was dead, thou didst rise and eat bread.

  13. And he said, While the child was yet alive, I fasted and wept: for I said, Who knoweth whether Jehovah will not be gracious to me, that the child may live?

  14. But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast? can I bring him back again? I shall go to him, but he will not return to me.

  15. Then said Hezekiah unto Isaiah, Good is the word of Jehovah which thou hast spoken. He said moreover, Is it not so, if peace and truth shall be in my days?

  16. And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days; and I fasted and prayed before the God of heaven,

  17. Howbeit thou art just in all that is come upon us; for thou hast dealt truly, but we have done wickedly;

  18. Then Job arose, and rent his robe, and shaved his head, and fell down upon the ground, and worshipped;

  19. and he said, Naked came I out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return thither: Jehovah gave, and Jehovah hath taken away; blessed be the name of Jehovah.

  20. In all this Job sinned not, nor charged God foolishly.

  21. But he said unto her, Thou speakest as one of the foolish women speaketh. What? shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil? In all this did not Job sin with his lips.

  22. Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: Therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty.

  23. Behold, he will slay me; I have no hope: Nevertheless I will maintain my ways before him.

  24. For hath any said unto God, I have bornechastisement, I will not offend any more:

  25. That which I see not teach thou me: If I have done iniquity, I will do it no more?
