  1. But if any harm follows, then you must take life for life,

  2. eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot,

  3. burning for burning, wound for wound, and bruise for bruise.

  4. “‘You shall not take vengeance, nor bear any grudge against the children of your people; but you shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am the LORD.

  5. “‘He who strikes any man mortally shall surely be put to death.

  6. He who strikes an animal mortally shall make it good, life for life.

  7. If anyone injures his neighbor; as he has done, so shall it be done to him:

  8. fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth; as he has injured someone, so shall it be done to him.

  9. He who kills an animal shall make it good; and he who kills a man shall be put to death.

  10. You shall have one kind of law for the foreigner as well as the native-born; for I am the LORD your God.’”

  11. then you shall do to him as he had thought to do to his brother. So you shall remove the evil from your midst.

  12. Those who remain shall hear, and fear, and will never again commit any such evil in your midst.

  13. Your eyes shall not pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.

  14. In arrogance, the wicked hunt down the weak. They are caught in the schemes that they devise.

  15. Don’t say, “I will pay back evil.” Wait for the LORD, and he will save you.

  17. Whoever digs a pit shall fall into it. Whoever rolls a stone, it will come back on him.

  18. Woe to you who destroy, but you weren’t destroyed; and who betray, but nobody betrayed you! When you have finished destroying, you will be destroyed; and when you have made an end of betrayal, you will be betrayed.

  19. “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’

  20. But I tell you, don’t resist him who is evil; but whoever strikes you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also.

  21. If anyone sues you to take away your coat, let him have your cloak also.

  22. Whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two.

  23. Give to him who asks you, and don’t turn away him who desires to borrow from you.

  24. “You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor, and hate your enemy.’

  25. But I tell you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you,
