  1. ¶ Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?

  2. The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD, and against his anointed, saying,

  3. Let us break their bands asunder, and cast away their cords from us.

  4. ¶ And he said, Go, and tell this people, Hear ye indeed, but understand not; and see ye indeed, but perceive not.

  5. Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and convert, and be healed.

  6. ¶ Thus saith the LORD, Where is the bill of your mother's divorcement, whom I have put away? or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities have ye sold yourselves, and for your transgressions is your mother put away.

  7. Wherefore, when I came, was there no man? when I called, was there none to answer? Is my hand shortened at all, that it cannot redeem? or have I no power to deliver? behold, at my rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a wilderness: their fish stinketh, because there is no water, and dieth for thirst.

  8. I clothe the heavens with blackness, and I make sackcloth their covering.

  9. ¶ The Lord GOD hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned.

  10. The Lord GOD hath opened mine ear, and I was not rebellious, neither turned away back.

  11. I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair: I hid not my face from shame and spitting.

  12. For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.

  13. He is near that justifieth me; who will contend with me? let us stand together: who is mine adversary? let him come near to me.

  14. Behold, the Lord GOD will help me; who is he that shall condemn me? lo, they all shall wax old as a garment; the moth shall eat them up.

  15. ¶ Who is among you that feareth the LORD, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God.

  16. Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye have kindled. This shall ye have of mine hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow.

  17. ¶ Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the LORD revealed?

  18. For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

  19. He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not.

  20. ¶ Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

  21. And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand:

  22. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

  23. And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.

  24. Verily I say unto you, It shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom and Gomorrha in the day of judgment, than for that city.

  25. But whereunto shall I liken this generation? It is like unto children sitting in the markets, and calling unto their fellows,
