  1. Since the days of our fathers have we been in a great trespass unto this day; and for our iniquities have we, our kings, and our priests, been delivered into the hand of the kings of the lands, to the sword, to captivity, and to a spoil, and to confusion of face, as it is this day.

  2. And now for a little space grace hath been shewed from the LORD our God, to leave us a remnant to escape, and to give us a nail in his holy place, that our God may lighten our eyes, and give us a little reviving in our bondage.

  3. For we were bondmen; yet our God hath not forsaken us in our bondage, but hath extended mercy unto us in the sight of the kings of Persia, to give us a reviving, to set up the house of our God, and to repair the desolations thereof, and to give us a wall in Judah and in Jerusalem.

  4. And now, O our God, what shall we say after this? for we have forsaken thy commandments,

  5. Which thou hast commanded by thy servants the prophets, saying, The land, unto which ye go to possess it, is an unclean land with the filthiness of the people of the lands, with their abominations, which have filled it from one end to another with their uncleanness.

  6. Now therefore give not your daughters unto their sons, neither take their daughters unto your sons, nor seek their peace or their wealth for ever: that ye may be strong, and eat the good of the land, and leave it for an inheritance to your children for ever.

  7. And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great trespass, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and hast given us such deliverance as this;

  8. Should we again break thy commandments, and join in affinity with the people of these abominations? wouldest not thou be angry with us till thou hadst consumed us, so that there should be no remnant nor escaping?

  9. O LORD God of Israel, thou art righteous: for we remain yet escaped, as it is this day: behold, we are before thee in our trespasses: for we cannot stand before thee because of this.

  10. But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there.

  11. ¶ If thou prepare thine heart, and stretch out thine hands toward him;

  12. If iniquity be in thine hand, put it far away, and let not wickedness dwell in thy tabernacles.

  13. For then shalt thou lift up thy face without spot; yea, thou shalt be stedfast, and shalt not fear:

  14. If thou return to the Almighty, thou shalt be built up, thou shalt put away iniquity far from thy tabernacles.

  15. He shall pray unto God, and he will be favourable unto him: and he shall see his face with joy: for he will render unto man his righteousness.

  16. He looketh upon men, and if any say, I have sinned, and perverted that which was right, and it profited me not;

  17. He will deliver his soul from going into the pit, and his life shall see the light.

  18. ¶ Surely it is meet to be said unto God, I have borne chastisement, I will not offend any more:

  19. That which I see not teach thou me: if I have done iniquity, I will do no more.

  20. He openeth also their ear to discipline, and commandeth that they return from iniquity.

  21. Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.

  22. All the ends of the world shall remember and turn unto the LORD: and all the kindreds of the nations shall worship before thee.

  23. Depart from evil, and do good; seek peace, and pursue it.

  24. The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

  25. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.
