  1. And he wrote there upon the stones a copy of the law of Moses, which he wrote in the presence of the children of Israel.

  2. And all Israel, and their elders, and officers, and their judges, stood on this side the ark and on that side before the priests the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the LORD, as well the stranger, as he that was born among them; half of them over against mount Gerizim, and half of them over against mount Ebal; as Moses the servant of the LORD had commanded before, that they should bless the people of Israel.

  3. And afterward he read all the words of the law, the blessings and cursings, according to all that is written in the book of the law.

  4. There was not a word of all that Moses commanded, which Joshua read not before all the congregation of Israel, with the women, and the little ones, and the strangers that were conversant among them.

  5. Also in the third year of his reign he sent to his princes, even to Benhail, and to Obadiah, and to Zechariah, and to Nethaneel, and to Michaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah.

  6. And with them he sent Levites, even Shemaiah, and Nethaniah, and Zebadiah, and Asahel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehonathan, and Adonijah, and Tobijah, and Tobadonijah, Levites; and with them Elishama and Jehoram, priests.

  7. And they taught in Judah, and had the book of the law of the LORD with them, and went about throughout all the cities of Judah, and taught the people.

  8. And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month.

  9. And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law.

  10. And Ezra the scribe stood upon a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchiah, and Hashum, and Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam.

  11. And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up:

  12. And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the LORD with their faces to the ground.

  13. Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people stood in their place.

  14. So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading.

  15. ¶ Maschil of Asaph. Give ear, O my people, to my law: incline your ears to the words of my mouth.

  16. I will open my mouth in a parable: I will utter dark sayings of old:

  17. Which we have heard and known, and our fathers have told us.

  18. We will not hide them from their children, shewing to the generation to come the praises of the LORD, and his strength, and his wonderful works that he hath done.

  19. For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children:

  20. That the generation to come might know them, even the children which should be born; who should arise and declare them to their children:

  21. That they might set their hope in God, and not forget the works of God, but keep his commandments:

  22. Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart:

  23. So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.

  24. ¶ My son, keep thy father's commandment, and forsake not the law of thy mother:

  25. Bind them continually upon thine heart, and tie them about thy neck.
