  1. And this shall be to you an everlasting ordinance. The seventh month, the tenth day of the month, you shall afflict your souls, and shall do no work, whether it be one of your own country, or a stranger that sojourneth among you.

  2. Upon this day shall be the expiation for you, and the cleansing from all your sins. You shall be cleansed before the Lord.

  3. For it is a sabbath of rest: and you shall afflict your souls by a perpetual religion.

  4. Let every one fear his father, and his mother. Keep my sabbaths. I am the Lord your God.

  5. Keep ye my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary. I am the Lord.

  6. And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

  7. Speak to the children of Israel, and thou shalt say to them: These are the feasts of the Lord, which you shall call holy.

  8. Six days shall ye do work: the seventh day, because it is the rest of the sabbath, shall be called holy. You shall do no work on that day: it is the sabbath of the Lord in all your habitations.

  9. Upon the tenth day of this seventh month shall be the day of atonement. It shall be most solemn, and shall be called holy: and you shall await your souls on that day, and shall offer a holocaust to the Lord.

  10. You shall do no servile work in the time of this day: because it is a day of propitiation, that the Lord your God may be merciful unto you.

  11. Every soul that is not afflicted on this day, shall perish from among his people.

  12. And every soul that shall do any work, the same will I destroy from among his people.

  13. You shall do no work therefore on that day: it shall be an everlasting ordinance unto you in all your generations, and dwellings.

  14. It is a sabbath of rest, and you shall afflict your souls beginning on the ninth day of the month. From evening until evening you shall celebrate your sabbaths.

  15. Every sabbath they shall be changed before the Lord: being received of the children of Israel by an everlasting covenant.

  16. Keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary. I am the Lord.

  17. Then shall the land enjoy her sabbaths all the days of her desolation. When you shall be

  18. In the enemy's land, she shall keep a sabbath, and rest in the sabbaths of her desolation: because she did not rest in your sabbaths, when you dwelt therein.

  19. And it came to pass, when the children of Israel were in the wilderness, and had found a man gathering sticks on the sabbath day,

  20. That they brought him to Moses and Aaron and the whole multitude.

  21. And they put him into prison, not knowing what they should do with him.

  22. And the Lord said to Moses: Let that man die, let all the multitude stone him without the camp.

  23. And when they had brought him out, they stoned him, and he died as the Lord had commanded.

  24. And on the sabbath day you shall offer two lambs of a year old without blemish, and two tenths of flour tempered with oil in sacrifice, and the libations,

  25. Which regularly are poured out every sabbath for the perpetual holocaust.
