  1. To what purpose do you offer me the multitude of your victims, saith the Lord? I am full, I desire not holocausts of rams, and fat of fatlings, and blood of calves, and lambs, and buck goats.

  2. When you came to appear before me, who required these things at your hands, that you should walk in my courts?

  3. Offer sacrifice no more in vain: incense is an abomination to me. The new moons, and the sabbaths and other festivals I will not abide, your assemblies are wicked.

  8. Is this such a fast as I have chosen: for a man to afflict his soul for a day? is this it, to wind his head about like a circle, and to spread sackcloth and ashes? wilt thou call this a fast, and a day acceptable to the Lord?

  9. And why seest thou the mote that is in thy brother's eye; and seest not the beam that is in thy own eye?

  10. Or how sayest thou to thy brother: Let me cast the mote out of thy eye; and behold a beam is in thy own eye?

  11. Thou hypocrite, cast out first the beam out of thy own eye, and then shalt thou see to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

  12. Then came to him from Jerusalem scribes and Pharisees, saying:

  13. Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the ancients? For they wash not their hands when they eat bread.

  14. But he answering, said to them: Why do you also transgress the commandment of God for your tradition? For God said:

  15. But a certain man named Ananias, with Saphira his wife, sold a piece of land,

  16. And by fraud kept back part of the price of the land, his wife being privy thereunto: and bringing a certain part of it, laid it at the feet of the apostles.

  17. But Peter said: Ananias, why hath Satan tempted thy heart, that thou shouldst lie to the Holy Ghost and by fraud keep part of the price of the land?

  18. Whilst it remained, did it not remain to thee? And after it was sold, was it not in thy power? Why hast thou conceived this thing in thy heart? Thou hast not lied to men, but to God.

  19. And Ananias, hearing these words, fell down and gave up the ghost. And there came great fear upon all that heard it.

  20. And the young men rising up, removed him, and carrying him out, buried him.

  21. And it was about the space of three hours after, when his wife, not knowing what had happened, came in.

  22. And Peter said to her: Tell me, woman, whether you sold the land for so much? And she said: Yea, for so much.

  23. Then Simon himself believed also and, being baptized, he adhered to Philip. And being astonished, wondered to see the signs and exceeding great miracles which were done.

  24. Now, when the apostles, who were in Jerusalem, had heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John.

  25. Who, when they were come, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Ghost.
