  1. For after thou didst convert me, I did penance: and after thou didst shew unto me, I struck my thigh: I am confounded and ashamed, because I have borne the reproach of my youth.

  2. For I have inebriated the weary soul: and I have filled every hungry soul.

  11. Caph. For if he hath cast off, he will also have mercy, according to the multitude of his mercies.

  12. Caph. For he hath not willingly afflicted, nor cast off the children of men.

  13. Mem. Why hath a living man murmured, man suffering for his sins?

  14. Coph. Thou drewest near in the day, when I called upon thee, thou saidst: Fear not.

And they that are saved of you shall remember me amongst the nations, to which they are carried captives: because I have broken their heart that was faithless, and revolted from me: and their eyes that went a fornicating after their idols: and they shall be displeased with themselves because of the evils which they have committed in all their abominations.

  16. Therefore thus saith the Lord God: Because I have removed them far off among the Gentiles, and because I have scattered them among the countries: I will be to them a little sanctuary in the countries whither they are come.

  17. And I will make you subject to my sceptre, and will bring you into the bands of the covenant.

  18. And there you shall remember your ways, and all your wicked doings with which you have been defiled; and you shall be displeased with yourselves in your own sight, for all your wicked deeds which you committed.

  19. Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable to thee, and redeem thou thy sins with alms, and thy iniquities with works of mercy to the poor: perhaps he will forgive thy offences.

  20. All these things came upon king Nabuchodonosor.

  21. At the end of twelve months he was walking in the palace of Babylon.

  22. Wherefore, behold, I will hedge up thy way with thorns, and I will stop it up with a wall, and she shall not find her paths.

  23. And she shall follow after her lovers, and shall not overtake them: and she shall seek them, and shall not find, and she shall say: I will go, and return to my first husband: because it was better with me then than now.

  24. Therefore, behold I will allure her, and will lead her into the wilderness: and I will speak to her heart.

  25. And I will give her vinedressers out of the same place, and the valley of Achor for an opening of hope: and she shall sing there according to the days of her youth, and according to the days of her coming up out of the land of Egypt.
