  1. Will God hear his cry when trouble cometh upon him?

  2. This is the portion of a wicked man with God, and the heritage of oppressors, which they shall receive of the Almighty.

  3. If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword: and his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.

  4. Those that remain of him shall be buried in death: and his widows shall not weep.

  5. Though he heap up silver as the dust, and prepare raiment as the clay;

  6. He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, and the innocent shall divide the silver.

  7. He buildeth his house as a moth, and as a booth that the keeper maketh.

  8. The rich man shall lie down, but he shall not be gathered: he openeth his eyes, and he is not.

  9. Terrors take hold on him as waters, a tempest stealeth him away in the night.

  10. The east wind carrieth him away, and he departeth: and as a storm hurleth him out of his place.

  11. For God shall cast upon him, and not spare: he would fain flee out of his hand.

  12. Men shall clap their hands at him, and shall hiss him out of his place.

  13. ¶ For God speaketh once, yea twice, yet man perceiveth it not.

  14. In a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falleth upon men, in slumberings upon the bed;

  15. Then he openeth the ears of men, and sealeth their instruction,

  16. That he may withdraw man from his purpose, and hide pride from man.

  17. He keepeth back his soul from the pit, and his life from perishing by the sword.

  18. ¶ He is chastened also with pain upon his bed, and the multitude of his bones with strong pain:

  19. So that his life abhorreth bread, and his soul dainty meat.

  20. His flesh is consumed away, that it cannot be seen; and his bones that were not seen stick out.

  21. Yea, his soul draweth near unto the grave, and his life to the destroyers.

  22. If there be a messenger with him, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to shew unto man his uprightness:

  23. Then he is gracious unto him, and saith, Deliver him from going down to the pit: I have found a ransom.

  24. His flesh shall be fresher than a child's: he shall return to the days of his youth:

  25. He shall pray unto God, and he will be favourable unto him: and he shall see his face with joy: for he will render unto man his righteousness.
