  1. Laban said to him: Let me find favour in thy sight: I have learned, by experience, that God hath blessed me for thy sake.

  2. Appoint thy wages which I shall give thee.

  3. But he answered: Thou knowest how I have served thee, and how great thy possession hath been in my hands.

  4. And Laban said: What shall I give thee? But he said: I require nothing; but if thou wilt do what I demand, I will feed and keep thy sheep again.

  5. Go round through all thy flocks, and separate all the sheep of divers colours, and speckled; and all that is brown and spotted, and of divers colours, as well among the sheep as among the goats, shall be my wages.

  6. And my justice shall answer for me tomorrow before thee, when the time of the bargain shall come; and all that is not of divers colours, and spotted, and brown, as well among the sheep as among the goats, shall accuse me of theft.

  7. And Laban said: I like well what thou demandest.

  8. If thou buy a Hebrew servant, six years shall he serve thee; in the seventh he shall go out free for nothing.

  9. With what raiment he came in, with the like let him go out: if having a wife, his wife also shall go out with him.

  10. But if his master gave him a wife, and she hath borne sons and daughters; the woman and her children shall be her master's: but he himself shall go out with his raiment.

  11. And if the servant shall say: I love my master and my wife and children, I will not go out free:

  12. His master shall bring him to the gods, and he shall be set to the door and the posts, and he shall bore his ear through with an awl: and he shall be his servant for ever.

  13. The Lord spoke to Moses, saying:

  14. Whosoever shall sin, and despising the Lord, shall deny to his neighbour the thing delivered to his keeping, which was committed to his trust; or shall by force extort any thing, or commit oppression;

  15. Being convicted of the offence, he shall restore

  16. All that he would have gotten by fraud, in the principal, and the fifth part besides, to the owner, whom he wronged.

  17. Moreover for his sin he shall offer a ram without blemish out of the flock: and shall give it to the priest, according to the estimation and measure of the offence.

  18. And he shall pray for him before the Lord: and he shall have forgiveness for every thing in doing of which he bath sinned.

  19. But they that dwelt in Gabaon, hearing all that Joshua had done to Jericho and Hai:

  20. Cunningly devising took for themselves provisions, laying old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles rent and sewed up again,

  21. And very old shoes, which for a show of age were clouted with patches, and old garments upon them: the loaves also, which they carried for provisions by the way, were hard, and broken into pieces:

  22. And they went to Joshua, who then abode in the camp at Galgal, and said to him, and to all Israel with him: We are come from a far country, desiring to make peace with you. And the children of Israel answered them, and said:

  23. Perhaps you dwell in the land which falls to our lot; if so, we can make no league with you.

  24. But they said to Joshua: We are thy servants. Joshua said to them: Who are you? and whence came you?

  25. They answered: From a very far country thy servants are come in the name of the Lord thy God. For we have heard the fame of his power, all the things that he did in Egypt.
