  1. ADONAI said to Moshe,

  2. "The tenth day of this seventh month is Yom-Kippur; you are to have a holy convocation, you are to deny yourselves, and you are to bring an offering made by fire to ADONAI.

  3. You are not to do any kind of work on that day, because it is Yom-Kippur, to make atonement for you before ADONAI your God.

  4. Anyone who does not deny himself on that day is to be cut off from his people;

  5. "'Yes, if you go against me and don't listen to me, I will increase your calamities sevenfold, according to your sins.

  6. I will send wild animals among you; they will rob you of your children, destroy your livestock and reduce your numbers, until your roads are deserted.

  7. "'If, in spite of all this, you refuse my correction and still go against me;

  8. then I too will go against you; and I, yes I, will strike you seven times over for your sins.

  9. If there is such a person, when he hears the words of this curse, he will bless himself secretly, saying to himself, 'I will be all right, even though I will stubbornly keep doing whatever I feel like doing; so that I, although "dry," [sinful,] will be added to the "watered" [righteous].'

  10. But ADONAI will not forgive him. Rather, the anger and jealousy of ADONAI will blaze up against that person. Every curse written in this book will be upon him. ADONAI will blot out his name from under heaven.

  11. ADONAI will single him out from all the tribes of Isra'el to experience what is bad in all the curses of the covenant written in this book of the Torah.

  12. God is a righteous judge, a God whose anger is present every day.

  13. If a person will not repent, he sharpens his sword. He has bent his bow, made it ready;

  14. he has also prepared for him weapons of death, his arrows, which he has made into burning shafts.

  15. From the womb, the wicked are estranged, liars on the wrong path since birth.

  16. Their venom is like snake's venom; they are like a serpent that stops its ears,

  17. so as not to hear the voice of the charmer, no matter how well he plays.

  18. "But my people did not listen to my voice; Isra'el would have none of me.

  19. So I gave them over to their stubborn hearts, to live by their own plans.

  20. Next, they rejected the beautiful land, they didn't trust his promise;

  21. and they complained in their tents, they didn't obey ADONAI.

  22. because they defied God's word, scorned the counsel of the Most High.

  23. So he humbled their hearts by hard labor; when they stumbled, no one came to their aid.

  24. Because you refused when I called, and no one paid attention when I put out my hand,

  25. but instead you neglected my counsel and would not accept my reproof;
