  1. One day an expert in the law stood up to test Him. “Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

  2. “What is written in the Law?” Jesus replied. “How do you read it?”

  3. He answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’ and ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’”

  4. “You have answered correctly,” Jesus said. “Do this and you will live.”

  5. But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

  6. Jesus took up this question and said, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead.

  7. Now by chance a priest was going down the same road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

  8. So too, when a Levite came to that spot and saw him, he passed by on the other side.

  9. But when a Samaritan on a journey came upon him, he looked at him and had compassion.

  10. He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him.

  11. The next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper. ‘Take care of him,’ he said, ‘and on my return I will repay you for any additional expense.’

  12. Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?”

  13. “The one who showed him mercy,” replied the expert in the law. Then Jesus told him, “Go and do likewise.”

  14. One of the experts in the law told Him, “Teacher, when You say these things, You insult us as well.”

  15. “Woe to you as well, experts in the law!” He replied. “You weigh men down with heavy burdens, but you yourselves will not lift a finger to lighten their load.

  16. Woe to you! You build tombs for the prophets, but it was your fathers who killed them.

  17. So you are witnesses consenting to the deeds of your fathers: They killed the prophets, and you build their tombs.

  18. Because of this, the wisdom of God said, ‘I will send them prophets and apostles; some of them they will kill and others they will persecute.’

  19. As a result, this generation will be charged with the blood of all the prophets that has been shed since the foundation of the world,

  20. from the blood of Abel to the blood of Zechariah, who was killed between the altar and the sanctuary. Yes, I tell you, all of it will be charged to this generation.

  21. Woe to you experts in the law! For you have taken away the key to knowledge. You yourselves have not entered, and you have hindered those who were entering.”
