  1. One basket had very good figs, like those that ripen early, but the other basket contained very poor figs, so bad they could not be eaten.

  2. “Jeremiah,” the LORD asked, “what do you see?” “Figs!” I replied. “The good figs are very good, but the bad figs are very bad, so bad they cannot be eaten.”

  3. Then Jesus told this parable: “A man had a fig tree that was planted in his vineyard. He went to look for fruit on it, but did not find any.

  4. So he said to the keeper of the vineyard, ‘Look, for the past three years I have come to search for fruit on this fig tree and haven’t found any. Therefore cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?’

  5. ‘Sir,’ the man replied, ‘leave it alone again this year, until I dig around it and fertilize it.

  6. If it bears fruit next year, fine. But if not, you can cut it down.’”

  7. Then Jesus told them a parable: “Look at the fig tree and all the trees.

  8. When they sprout leaves, you can see for yourselves and know that summer is near.

  9. So also, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near.
