  1. This is My covenant with you and your descendants after you, which you are to keep: Every male among you must be circumcised.

  2. You are to circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, and this will be a sign of the covenant between Me and you.

  3. Generation after generation, every male must be circumcised when he is eight days old, including those born in your household and those purchased from a foreigner—even those who are not your offspring.

  4. Whether they are born in your household or purchased, they must be circumcised. My covenant in your flesh will be an everlasting covenant.

  5. But if any male is not circumcised, he will be cut off from his people; he has broken My covenant.”

  6. “Command the Israelites to send away from the camp anyone with a skin disease, anyone who has a bodily discharge, and anyone who is defiled by a dead body.

  7. You must send away male and female alike; send them outside the camp so they will not defile their camp, where I dwell among them.”

  8. So the Israelites did this, sending such people outside the camp. They did just as the LORD had instructed Moses.

  9. See, I have taught you statutes and ordinances just as the LORD my God has commanded me, so that you may follow them in the land that you are about to enter and possess.

  10. Observe them carefully, for this will show your wisdom and understanding in the sight of the peoples, who will hear of all these statutes and say, “Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.”

  11. For what nation is great enough to have a god as near to them as the LORD our God is to us whenever we call on Him?

  12. And what nation is great enough to have righteous statutes and ordinances like this entire law I set before you today?

  13. Only be on your guard and diligently watch yourselves, so that you do not forget the things your eyes have seen, and so that they do not slip from your heart as long as you live. Teach them to your children and grandchildren.

  14. The day you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, the LORD said to me, “Gather the people before Me to hear My words, so that they may learn to fear Me all the days they live on the earth, and that they may teach them to their children.”

  15. You came near and stood at the base of the mountain, a mountain blazing with fire to the heavens, with black clouds and deep darkness.

  16. And the LORD spoke to you out of the fire. You heard the sound of the words, but saw no form; there was only a voice.

  17. He declared to you His covenant, which He commanded you to follow—the Ten Commandments that He wrote on two tablets of stone.

  18. At that time the LORD commanded me to teach you the statutes and ordinances you are to follow in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess.

  19. No man with crushed or severed genitals may enter the assembly of the LORD.

  20. No one of illegitimate birth may enter the assembly of the LORD, nor may any of his descendants, even to the tenth generation.

  21. No Ammonite or Moabite or any of their descendants may enter the assembly of the LORD, even to the tenth generation.

  22. For they did not meet you with food and water on your way out of Egypt, and they hired Balaam son of Beor from Pethor in Aram-naharaim to curse you.

  23. It is not as though God’s word has failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel.

  24. Nor because they are Abraham’s descendants are they all his children. On the contrary, “Through Isaac your offspring will be reckoned.”

  25. So it is not the children of the flesh who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as offspring.
