  1. Only he shall not multiply horses to himself, nor cause the people to return to Egypt, to the end that he may multiply horses; forasmuch as Jehovah hath said unto you, Ye shall henceforth return no more that way.

  2. Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.

  3. And it shall be, when he sitteth upon the throne of his kingdom, that he shall write him a copy of this law in a book, out of that which is before the priests the Levites:

  4. and it shall be with him, and he shall read therein all the days of his life; that he may learn to fear Jehovah his God, to keep all the words of this law and these statutes, to do them;

  5. that his heart be not lifted up above his brethren, and that he turn not aside from the commandment, to the right hand, or to the left: to the end that he may prolong his days in his kingdom, he and his children, in the midst of Israel.

  6. and the judges shall make diligent inquisition: and, behold, if the witness be a false witness, and have testified falsely against his brother;

  7. then shall ye do unto him, as he had thought to do unto his brother: so shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of thee.

  8. The fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children be put to death for the fathers: every man shall be put to death for his own sin.

  9. If there be a controversy between men, and they come unto judgment, and the judges judge them; then they shall justify the righteous, and condemn the wicked.

  10. Cursed be he that wresteth the justice due to the sojourner, fatherless, and widow. And all the people shall say, Amen.

  11. Only be strong and very courageous, to observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest have good success whithersoever thou goest.

  12. This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth, but thou shalt meditate thereon day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

  13. And Samuel told all the words of Jehovah unto the people that asked of him a king.

  14. And he said, This will be the manner of the king that shall reign over you: he will take your sons, and appoint them unto him, for his chariots, and to be his horsemen; and they shall run before his chariots;

  15. and he will appoint them unto him for captains of thousands, and captains of fifties; and he will set some to plow his ground, and to reap his harvest, and to make his instruments of war, and the instruments of his chariots.

  16. And he will take your daughters to be perfumers, and to be cooks, and to be bakers.

  17. And he will take your fields, and your vineyards, and your oliveyards, even the best of them, and give them to his servants.

  18. And he will take the tenth of your seed, and of your vineyards, and give to his officers, and to his servants.

  19. And he will take your men-servants, and your maid-servants, and your goodliest young men, and your asses, and put them to his work.

  20. He will take the tenth of your flocks: and ye shall be his servants.

  21. And ye shall cry out in that day because of your king whom ye shall have chosen you; and Jehovah will not answer you in that day.

  22. The God of Israel said, The Rock of Israel spake to me: One that ruleth over men righteously, That ruleth in the fear of God,

  23. He shall beas the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, A morning without clouds, Whenthe tender grassspringeth out of the earth, Through clear shining after rain.

  24. In the thirty and seventh year of Joash king of Judah began Jehoash the son of Jehoahaz to reign over Israel in Samaria, and reigned sixteen years.

  25. And he did that which was evil in the sight of Jehovah; he departed not from all the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, wherewith he made Israel to sin; but he walked therein.
