If I have made gold my hope, And have said to the fine gold, Thou artmy confidence;

If I have rejoiced because my wealth was great, And because my hand had gotten much;

The desire of the sluggard killeth him; For his hands refuse to labor.

There is that coveteth greedily all the day long; But the righteous giveth and withholdeth not.

Weary not thyself to be rich; Cease from thine own wisdom.

Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? Forrichescertainly make themselves wings, Like an eagle that flieth toward heaven.

Remove far from me falsehood and lies; Give me neither poverty nor riches; Feed me with the food that is needful for me:

Lest I be full, and denythee, and say, Who is Jehovah? Or lest I be poor, and steal, And use profanely the name of my God.

What profit hath man of all his labor wherein he laboreth under the sun?

One generation goeth, and another generation cometh; but the earth abideth for ever.

Shall they not rise up suddenly that shall bite thee, and awake that shall vex thee, and thou shalt be for booty unto them?

Because thou hast plundered many nations, all the remnant of the peoples shall plunder thee, because of men’s blood, and for the violence done to the land, to the city and to all that dwell therein.
