  1. When thou sittest to eat with a ruler, Thou considerest diligently that which is before thee,

  2. And thou hast put a knife to thy throat, If thou art a man of appetite.

  3. Have no desire to his dainties, seeing it is lying food.

  4. Eat not the bread of an evil eye, And have no desire to his dainties,

  5. For as he hath thought in his soul, so is he, `Eat and drink,' saith he to thee, And his heart is not with thee.

  6. Thy morsel thou hast eaten thou dost vomit up, And hast marred thy words that are sweet.

  7. Honour not thyself before a king, And in the place of the great stand not.

  8. For better that he hath said to thee, `Come thou up hither,' Than that he humble thee before a noble, Whom thine eyes have seen.

  9. and into whatever house ye do enter, first say, Peace to this house;

  10. and if indeed there may be there the son of peace, rest on it shall your peace; and if not so, upon you it shall turn back.

  11. `And in that house remain, eating and drinking the things they have, for worthy is the workman of his hire; go not from house to house,

  12. And he spake a simile unto those called, marking how they were choosing out the first couches, saying unto them,

  13. `When thou mayest be called by any one to marriage-feasts, thou mayest not recline on the first couch, lest a more honourable than thou may have been called by him,

  14. and he who did call thee and him having come shall say to thee, Give to this one place, and then thou mayest begin with shame to occupy the last place.

  15. `But, when thou mayest be called, having gone on, recline in the last place, that when he who called thee may come, he may say to thee, Friend, come up higher; then thou shalt have glory before those reclining with thee;

  16. because every one who is exalting himself shall be humbled, and he who is humbling himself shall be exalted.'
