  1. Know this day: for I don’t speak with your children who have not known, and who have not seen the chastisement of the LORD your God, his greatness, his mighty hand, his outstretched arm,

  2. his signs, and his works, which he did in the midst of Egypt to Pharaoh the king of Egypt, and to all his land;

  3. and what he did to the army of Egypt, to their horses, and to their chariots; how he made the water of the Sea of Suf to overflow them as they pursued after you, and how the LORD has destroyed them to this day;

  4. and what he did to you in the wilderness, until you came to this place;

  5. and what he did to Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, the son of Reuben; how the earth opened its mouth, and swallowed them up, and their households, and their tents, and every living thing that followed them, in the midst of all Israel;

  6. but your eyes have seen all of the LORD’s great work which he did.

  7. Therefore you shall keep all the commandment which I command you this day, that you may be strong, and go in and possess the land, where you go over to possess it;

  8. and that you may prolong your days in the land, which the LORD swore to your fathers to give to them and to their seed, a land flowing with milk and honey.

  9. I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commits iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men;

  10. but my loving kindness shall not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before you.

  11. “If your people Israel be struck down before the enemy, because they have sinned against you, and shall turn again and confess your name, and pray and make supplication before you in this house;

  12. then hear from heaven, and forgive the sin of your people Israel, and bring them again to the land which you gave to them and to their fathers.

  13. “When the sky is shut up, and there is no rain, because they have sinned against you; if they pray toward this place, and confess your name, and turn from their sin, when you afflict them:

  14. then hear in heaven, and forgive the sin of your servants, and of your people Israel, when you teach them the good way in which they should walk; and send rain on your land, which you have given to your people for an inheritance.

  15. “If there is famine in the land, if there is pestilence, if there is blight or mildew, locust or caterpillar; if their enemies besiege them in the land of their cities; whatever plague or whatever sickness there is;

  16. whatever prayer and supplication be made by any man, or by all your people Israel, who shall know every man his own plague and his own sorrow, and shall spread out his hands toward this house:

  17. then hear from heaven, your dwelling place and forgive, and render to every man according to all his ways, whose heart you know; (for you, even you only, know the hearts of the children of men;)

  18. that they may fear you, to walk in your ways, so long as they live in the land which you gave to our fathers.

  19. “If I shut up the sky so that there is no rain, or if I command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people;

  20. if my people, who are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

  21. Blessed is the man whom you discipline, LORD, and teach out of your Torah;

  22. that you may give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit is dug for the wicked.

  23. Many times he delivered them, but they were rebellious in their counsel, and were brought low in their iniquity.

  24. Nevertheless he regarded their distress, when he heard their cry.

  25. Fools are afflicted because of their disobedience, and because of their iniquities.
