  1. Know this day the things that your children know not, who saw not the chastisements of the Lord your God, his great doings and strong hand, and stretched out arm,

  2. The signs and works which he did in the midst of Egypt to king Pharao, and to all his land,

  3. And to all the host of the Egyptians, and to their horses and chariots: how the waters of the Red Sea covered them, when they pursued you, and how the Lord destroyed them until this present day:

  4. And what he hath done to you in the wilderness, til you came to this place:

  5. And to Dathan and Abiron the sons of Eliab, who was the son of Ruben: whom the earth, opening her mouth swallowed up with their households and tents, and all their substance, which they had in the midst of Israel.

  6. Your eyes have seen all the great works of the Lord, that he hath done,

  7. That you may keep all his commandments, which I command you this day, and may go in, and possess the land, to which you are entering,

  8. And may live in it a long time: which the Lord promised by oath to your fathers, and to their seed, a land which floweth with milk and honey.

  9. I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son: and if he commit any iniquity, I will correct him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men.

  10. But my mercy I will not take away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I removed from before my face.

  11. If thy people Israel be overcome by their enemies, (for they will sin against thee,) and being converted shall do penance, and call upon thy name, and pray to thee in this place,

  12. Then hear thou from heaven, and forgive the sin of thy people Israel and bring them back into the land which thou gavest to them, and their fathers.

  13. If the heavens be shut up, and there fall no rain by reason of the sin of the people, and they shall pray to thee in this place, and confess to thy name, and be converted from their sins, where thou dost afflict them,

  14. Then hear thou from heaven, O Lord, and forgive the sins of thy servants and of thy people Israel and teach them the good way in which they may walk: and give rain to thy land which thou hast given to thy people to possess.

  15. If a famine arise in the land, or a pestilence or blasting, or mildew, or locusts, or caterpillars: or if their enemies waste the country, and besiege the cities, whatsoever scourge or infirmity shall be upon them:

  16. Then if any of thy people Israel, knowing his own scourge and infirmity shall pray, and shall spread forth his hands in this house,

  17. Hear thou from heaven, from thy high dwelling place, and forgive, and render to every one according to his ways, which thou knowest him to have in his heart: for thou only knowest the hearts of the children of men:

  18. That they may fear thee, and walk in thy ways all the days that they live upon the face of the land, which thou hast given to our fathers.

  19. If I shut up heaven, and there fall no rain, or if I give orders, and command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people:

  20. And my people, upon whom my name is called, being converted, shall make supplication to me, and seek out my face, and do penance for their most wicked ways: then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sins and will heal their land.

  21. ¶ Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O LORD, and teachest him out of thy law;

  22. That thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be digged for the wicked.

  23. Who is wise, and will keep these things; and will understand the mercies of the Lord?

  24. Nevertheless he regarded their affliction, when he heard their cry:

  25. ¶ Fools because of their transgression, and because of their iniquities, are afflicted.
