  1. Therefore she said to Abraham, “Cast out this handmaid and her son! For the son of this handmaid will not be heir with my son, Isaac.”

  2. The thing was very grievous in Abraham’s sight on account of his son.

  3. God said to Abraham, “Don’t let it be grievous in your sight because of the boy, and because of your handmaid. In all that Sarah says to you, listen to her voice. For from Isaac will your seed be called.

  4. I will also make a nation of the son of the handmaid, because he is your seed.”

  5. Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread and a bottle of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder; and gave her the child, and sent her away. She departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.

  6. For it is written that Abraham had two sons, one by the handmaid, and one by the free woman.

  7. However, the son by the handmaid was born according to the flesh, but the son by the free woman was born through promise.

  8. These things contain an allegory, for these are two covenants. One is from Mount Sinai, bearing children to bondage, which is Hagar.

  9. For this Hagar is Mount Sinai in Arabia, and answers to the Jerusalem that exists now, for she is in bondage with her children.

  10. But the Jerusalem that is above is free, which is the mother of us all.

  11. For it is written, “Rejoice, you barren who don’t bear. Break out and shout, you that don’t travail. For more are the children of the desolate than of her who has a husband.”

  12. Now we, brothers, as Isaac was, are children of promise.

  13. But as then, he who was born according to the flesh persecuted him who was born according to the Spirit, so also it is now.

  14. However what does the Scripture say? “Throw out the handmaid and her son, for the son of the handmaid will not inherit with the son of the free woman.”
