  1. When I thought to know this, it was too painful for me;

  2. Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.

  3. Surely thou didst set them in slippery places: thou castedst them down into destruction.

  4. How are they brought into desolation, as in a moment! they are utterly consumed with terrors.

  5. As a dream when one awaketh; so, O Lord, when thou awakest, thou shalt despise their image.

  7. So foolish was I, and ignorant: I was as a beast before thee.

  8. ¶ There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death.

  10. ¶ Folly is joy to him that is destitute of wisdom: but a man of understanding walketh uprightly.

  11. ¶ He that loveth pleasure shall be a poor man: he that loveth wine and oil shall not be rich.

  12. Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:

  13. For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.

  14. ¶ Boast not thyself of to morrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth.

  15. ¶ The full soul loatheth an honeycomb; but to the hungry soul every bitter thing is sweet.

  16. All things are full of labour; man cannot utter it: the eye is not satisfied with seeing, nor the ear filled with hearing.

  17. ¶ I said in mine heart, Go to now, I will prove thee with mirth, therefore enjoy pleasure: and, behold, this also is vanity.

  18. I said of laughter, It is mad: and of mirth, What doeth it?

  19. I sought in mine heart to give myself unto wine, yet acquainting mine heart with wisdom; and to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was that good for the sons of men, which they should do under the heaven all the days of their life.

  20. I made me great works; I builded me houses; I planted me vineyards:

  21. I made me gardens and orchards, and I planted trees in them of all kind of fruits:

  22. I made me pools of water, to water therewith the wood that bringeth forth trees:

  23. I got me servants and maidens, and had servants born in my house; also I had great possessions of great and small cattle above all that were in Jerusalem before me:

  24. I gathered me also silver and gold, and the peculiar treasure of kings and of the provinces: I gat me men singers and women singers, and the delights of the sons of men, as musical instruments, and that of all sorts.

  25. So I was great, and increased more than all that were before me in Jerusalem: also my wisdom remained with me.
