  1. ¶ Blessed is the man whom thou chastenest, O LORD, and teachest him out of thy law;

  2. That thou mayest give him rest from the days of adversity, until the pit be digged for the wicked.

  3. My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:

  4. For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

  5. It is better to go to the house of mourning, than to go to the house of feasting: for that is the end of all men; and the living will lay it to his heart.

  6. Sorrow is better than laughter: for by the sadness of the countenance the heart is made better.

  9. With my soul have I desired thee in the night; yea, with my spirit within me will I seek thee early: for when thy judgments are in the earth, the inhabitants of the world will learn righteousness.

  10. By this therefore shall the iniquity of Jacob be purged; and this is all the fruit to take away his sin; when he maketh all the stones of the altar as chalkstones that are beaten in sunder, the groves and images shall not stand up.

  11. Saying to a stock, Thou art my father; and to a stone, Thou hast brought me forth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will say, Arise, and save us.

  12. The wind shall eat up all thy pastors, and thy lovers shall go into captivity: surely then shalt thou be ashamed and confounded for all thy wickedness.

  13. O inhabitant of Lebanon, that makest thy nest in the cedars, how gracious shalt thou be when pangs come upon thee, the pain as of a woman in travail!

  14. Surely after that I was turned, I repented; and after that I was instructed, I smote upon my thigh: I was ashamed, yea, even confounded, because I did bear the reproach of my youth.

  15. It is good for a man that he bear the yoke in his youth.

  16. He sitteth alone and keepeth silence, because he hath borne it upon him.

  17. And they that escape of you shall remember me among the nations whither they shall be carried captives, because I am broken with their whorish heart, which hath departed from me, and with their eyes, which go a whoring after their idols: and they shall lothe themselves for the evils which they have committed in all their abominations.

  18. And I will cause you to pass under the rod, and I will bring you into the bond of the covenant:

  19. And there shall ye remember your ways, and all your doings, wherein ye have been defiled; and ye shall lothe yourselves in your own sight for all your evils that ye have committed.

  20. ¶ Therefore, behold, I will hedge up thy way with thorns, and make a wall, that she shall not find her paths.

  21. And she shall follow after her lovers, but she shall not overtake them; and she shall seek them, but shall not find them: then shall she say, I will go and return to my first husband; for then was it better with me than now.

  22. I will go and return to my place, till they acknowledge their offence, and seek my face: in their affliction they will seek me early.

  23. And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

  24. And patience, experience; and experience, hope:

  25. ¶ And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
