  1. ¶ Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

  2. ¶ And unto Adam he said, Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying, Thou shalt not eat of it: cursed is the ground for thy sake; in sorrow shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life;

  5. And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;

  6. And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.

  7. But as for you, ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good, to bring to pass, as it is this day, to save much people alive.

  8. Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses.

  9. But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel.

  10. And your children shall wander in the wilderness forty years, and bear your whoredoms, until your carcases be wasted in the wilderness.

  11. Thou shalt also consider in thine heart, that, as a man chasteneth his son, so the LORD thy God chasteneth thee.

  12. Who led thee through that great and terrible wilderness, wherein were fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where there was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint;

  13. Who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that he might humble thee, and that he might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end;

  14. Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.

  15. And while he yet talked with them, behold, the messenger came down unto him: and he said, Behold, this evil is of the LORD; what should I wait for the LORD any longer?

  16. And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great trespass, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and hast given us such deliverance as this;

  17. Even as I have seen, they that plow iniquity, and sow wickedness, reap the same.

  18. ¶ Although affliction cometh not forth of the dust, neither doth trouble spring out of the ground;

  19. Yet man is born unto trouble, as the sparks fly upward.

  20. ¶ Behold, happy is the man whom God correcteth: therefore despise not thou the chastening of the Almighty:

  21. If he cut off, and shut up, or gather together, then who can hinder him?

  22. ¶ Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.

  23. But now he hath made me weary: thou hast made desolate all my company.

  24. And thou hast filled me with wrinkles, which is a witness against me: and my leanness rising up in me beareth witness to my face.

  25. He teareth me in his wrath, who hateth me: he gnasheth upon me with his teeth; mine enemy sharpeneth his eyes upon me.
