  1. But they holding Jesus led him to Caiphas the high priest, where the scribes and the ancients were assembled.

  2. And Peter followed him afar off, even to the court of the high priest, And going in, he sat with the servants, that he might see the end.

  3. And the chief priests and the whole council sought false witness against Jesus, that they might put him to death.

  4. And they found not, whereas many false witnesses had come in. And last of all there came two false witnesses:

  5. And they said: This man said, I am able to destroy the temple of God and after three days to rebuild it.

  6. And the high priest rising up, said to him: Answerest thou nothing to the things which these witness against thee?

  7. Who having heard this, early in the morning, entered into the temple and taught. And the high priest coming, and they that were with him, called together the council and all the ancients of the children of Israel: and they sent to the prison to have them brought.

  8. But when the ministers came and opening the prison found them not there, they returned and told,

  9. Saying: The prison indeed we found shut with all diligence, and the keepers standing before the door: but opening it, we found no man within.

  10. Now when the officer of the temple and the chief priests heard these words, they were in doubt concerning them, what would come to pass.

  11. But one came and told them: Behold, the men whom you put in prison are in the temple, standing and teaching the people.

  12. Then went the officer with the ministers and brought them without violence: for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned.

  13. And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them,

  14. Saying: Commanding, we commanded you that you should not teach in this name. And behold, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine: and you have a mind to bring the blood of this man upon us.

  15. And Paul, looking upon the council, said: Men, brethren, I have conversed with all good conscience before God until this present day.

  16. And the high priest, Ananias, commanded them that stood by him to strike him on the mouth.

  17. Then Paul said to him: God shall strike thee, thou whited wall. For, sittest thou to judge me according to the law and, contrary to the law, commandest me to be struck?

  18. And they that stood by said: Dost thou revile the high priest of God?

  19. And Paul said: I knew not, brethren, that he is the high priest. For it is written: Thou shalt not speak evil of the prince of thy people.
