  1. And the Lord the God of their fathers sent to them, by the hand of his messengers, rising early, and daily admonishing them: because he spared his people and his dwelling place.

  2. But they mocked the messengers of God, and despised his words, and misused the prophets, until the wrath of the Lord arose against his people, and there was no remedy.

  3. Bring to the Lord glory unto his name. Bring up sacrifices, and come into his courts:

  4. Adore ye the Lord in his holy court. Let all the earth be moved at his presence.

  5. Say ye among the Gentiles, the Lord hath reigned. For he hath corrected the world, which shall not be moved: he will judge the people with justice.

  6. Let the heavens rejoice, and let the earth be glad, let the sea be moved, and the fulness thereof:

  7. Because I called, and you refused: I stretched out my hand, and there was none that regarded.

  8. You have despised all my counsel, and have neglected my reprehensions.

  9. I also will laugh in your destruction, and will mock when that shall come to you which you feared.

  10. When sudden calamity shall fall on you, and destruction, as a tempest, shall be at hand: when tribulation and distress shall come upon you:

  11. Then shall they call upon me, and I will not hear: they shall rise in the morning, and shall not find me:

  12. Because they have hated instruction, and received not the fear of the Lord,

  13. Nor consented to my counsel, but despised all my reproof.

  14. Therefore they shall eat the fruit of their own way, and shall be filled with their own devices.

  15. The man that with a stiff neck despiseth him that reproveth him, shall suddenly be destroyed: and health shall not follow him.

  16. Harden not your hearts, as in the provocation, in the day of temptation in the desert,

  17. While it is said: To day, if you shall hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in that provocation.

  18. Again he limiteth a certain day, saying in David; To day, after so long a time as it is above said: To day if you shall hear his voice, harden not your hearts.

  19. And the rest of the men, who were not slain by these plagues, did not do penance from the works of their hands, that they should not adore devils and idols of gold and silver and brass and stone and wood, which neither can see nor hear nor walk:

  20. Neither did they penance from their murders nor from their sorceries nor from their fornication nor from their thefts.
