  1. “Some of you I overthrew as I overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and you were like a firebrand snatched from a blaze, yet you did not return to Me,” declares the LORD.

  2. “Therefore, that is what I will do to you, O Israel, and since I will do this to you, prepare to meet your God, O Israel!

  3. “I have cut off the nations; their corner towers are destroyed. I have made their streets deserted with no one to pass through. Their cities are laid waste, with no man, no inhabitant.

  4. I said, ‘Surely you will fear Me and accept correction.’ Then her dwelling place would not be cut off despite all for which I punished her. But they rose early to corrupt all their deeds.

  5. I struck you—all the work of your hands—with blight, mildew, and hail, but you did not turn to Me, declares the LORD.

  6. I will surely wave My hand over them, so that they will become plunder for their own servants. Then you will know that the LORD of Hosts has sent Me.”

  7. But they refused to pay attention and turned a stubborn shoulder; they stopped up their ears from hearing.

  8. They made their hearts like flint and would not listen to the law or to the words that the LORD of Hosts had sent by His Spirit through the earlier prophets. Therefore great anger came from the LORD of Hosts.

  9. Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them, for they were struck down in the wilderness.

  10. These things took place as examples to keep us from craving evil things as they did.

  11. Do not be idolaters, as some of them were. As it is written: “The people sat down to eat and to drink, and got up to indulge in revelry.”

  12. We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did, and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died.

  13. We should not test Christ, as some of them did, and were killed by snakes.

  14. And do not complain, as some of them did, and were killed by the destroying angel.

  15. Now these things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the fulfillment of the ages has come.

  16. After all, it is only right for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you,

  17. if He condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to destruction, reducing them to ashes as an example of what is coming on the ungodly;

  18. Even though I have given her time to repent of her immorality, she is unwilling.

  19. Behold, I will cast her onto a bed of sickness, and those who commit adultery with her will suffer great tribulation unless they repent of her deeds.

  20. In fear of her torment, they will stand at a distance and cry out: “Woe, woe to the great city, the mighty city of Babylon! For in a single hour your judgment has come.”
