  1. And they brought grief to Isaac and Rebekah.

  2. So Isaac called for Jacob and blessed him. “Do not take a wife from the Canaanite women,” he commanded.

  3. May I never enter their council; may I never join their assembly. For they kill men in their anger, and hamstring oxen on a whim.

  9. And when you take some of their daughters as brides for your sons, their daughters will prostitute themselves to their gods and cause your sons to do the same.

  10. And he warned the congregation, “Move away now from the tents of these wicked men. Do not touch anything that belongs to them, or you will be swept away because of all their sins.”

  11. So they moved away from the dwellings of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram. Meanwhile, Dathan and Abiram had come out and stood at the entrances to their tents with their wives and children and infants.

  12. and the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them and their households—all Korah’s men and all their possessions.

  13. While Israel was staying in Shittim, the men began to indulge in sexual immorality with the daughters of Moab,

  14. who also invited them to the sacrifices for their gods. And the people ate and bowed down to these gods.

  15. So Israel joined in worshiping Baal of Peor, and the anger of the LORD burned against them.

  16. Then the LORD said to Moses, “Take all the leaders of the people and execute them in broad daylight before the LORD, so that His fierce anger may turn away from Israel.”

  17. So Moses told the judges of Israel, “Each of you must kill all of his men who have joined in worshiping Baal of Peor.”

  18. Just then an Israelite man brought to his family a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses and the whole congregation of Israel while they were weeping at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting.

  19. On seeing this, Phinehas son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, got up from the assembly, took a spear in his hand,

  20. followed the Israelite into his tent, and drove the spear through both of them—through the Israelite and on through the belly of the woman. So the plague against the Israelites was halted,

  21. For they assailed you deceitfully when they seduced you in the matter of Peor and their sister Cozbi, the daughter of the Midianite leader, the woman who was killed on the day the plague came because of Peor.”

  22. And then I will do to you what I had planned to do to them.”

  23. and when the LORD your God has delivered them over to you to defeat them, then you must devote them to complete destruction. Make no treaty with them and show them no mercy.

  24. Do not intermarry with them. Do not give your daughters to their sons or take their daughters for your sons,

  25. because they will turn your sons away from following Me to serve other gods. Then the anger of the LORD will burn against you, and He will swiftly destroy you.
