  1. And the whole earth was of one language and of one speech.

  2. And it came to pass, as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there.

  3. And they said one to another, Come, let us make brick, and burn them thoroughly. And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar.

  11. And how hear we, every man in our own language wherein we were born?

  12. Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, in Judæa and Cappadocia, in Pontus and Asia,

  13. in Phrygia and Pamphylia, in Egypt and the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and sojourners from Rome, both Jews and proselytes,

  14. Cretans and Arabians, we hear them speaking in our tongues the mighty works of God.

  15. While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Spirit fell on all them that heard the word.

  16. And they of the circumcision that believed were amazed, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Spirit.

  17. For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,

  18. Love never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall be done away; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall be done away.

  19. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part;

  20. but when that which is perfect is come, that which is in part shall be done away.

  21. For he that speaketh in a tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God; for no man understandeth; but in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

  22. But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men edification, and exhortation, and consolation.

  23. He that speaketh in a tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.

  24. Now I would have you all speak with tongues, but rather that ye should prophesy: and greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

  25. But now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, unless I speak to you either by way of revelation, or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching?
